Bowenfels area of NSW - looking for McKenna or similar surname
« on: Tuesday 20 May 14 12:36 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the family name McKenna (or something that sounds similar) in the 1850s in the Bowenfels area near Lithgow NSW.
Just looking for leads at the moment. I also notice there is a McKane's Fall Road in the area. Does anyone have any information on the history of the falls. Who was McKane?

Thanks, Katharine.

Simply guessing at the moment but McKanes Falls Road crosses the river between Jonolan Caves Road and Great Western Highway Roughly west of Hartley.

I would say the road was named for the settlers McKane who may have lived in the area.

I am a little mystified by your post however as it pretty far reaching. Are you looking for a particular family?

There are scattered BMD references for McKennas in that era,   none closer than Mudgee or Bathurst which are 100 km and 60 km from Bowenfels.

None for Bowenfels, Lithgow, Hartley or Wallerawang  which would be the locations near Bowenfels.

There are families of McKane and McKenna in that General area, Bowenfels is a small community and probably would not be listed on BDM Registrations. But Bathurst, Cowra, Orange and Boorowa are listed.

McKenna has been subjected to variety of spelling issues.  I will go through some offline resources for c1850s East andWest Macquarie later today (just after midnight at present)

In the 1850's,   the places where a BDM event at Bowenfels would have been registered,   are Hartley and Wallerawang.   I have actual events registered at those two places,   which are each about 10 km up and down the road from Bowenfels.

All those other places you mentioned are quite a long way away.   Bathurst would be the closest,   and it is two long days walk from Bowenfels,  and I know this,  because I walked there recently.

Why does the OP think their family was there ?  Don't waste our time casting an excessively wide net by withholding relevant information or hints.

The OP has asked a very vague question,   and named a specific, somewhat, obscure,  small place.

About a family with a name which is by no means uncommon,  and occurs by my count at over 20 places in New South Wales.

The OP almost certainly has more information about why they think this location is relevant.  What are the names of their potential relatives ?

I am quite happy to look up the parish maps for the area,  a field in which I have a little expertise.   I'm disinclined to do so over a 200 km wide "general area",   only to have the OP pop up again later on with more information which they all ready knew,  but for whatever reason did not bother to tell us.
