George Simpson

Hi everyone! Hoping that someone may be able to help us with a major mystery!
We're looking for George Simpson who was born @1843 in Kent. He moved to Australia at some point and married MaryAnn Schmutter in 1871 in Armidale NSW. We have no knowledge of his life in Kent at all. No-one in the family knows anything either. We've tried!
We're just hoping that someone may be able to help us with George's so we can illiminate them in the hope to find ours, alot of work, but it may be the only way to find out who his family was.

Just noticed that no one has replied to your post.

I have been doing another similar situation with a Kent man going to NSW. Sees that it was the norm to put place of birth on an aussie marriage certificate as the county and no town (or maybe just NSW)

Still working on the other one which was from a similar period.

Do you know when and how he arrived in Australia ??

Will do some digging around as see if anything surfaces.

Hi Adrian. Unfortunately what we wrote is what we know. Wish we had more, but it seems that he was extremely illusive. We still have no idea of when he came to Australia. But we're still hoping!!!!!

What names did they give the children? Sometimes these can indicate parents and other family names.

Hi Kate,
We've been doing some more searching and bought some certificates for the birth of some of George's children and they're all showing that he would have to have been born in 1848. We have another couple coming to confirm that the details are the same throughout.... at the moment we aren't dismissing anything!

Do you have the names of George's children? I am a Kent SIMPSON descendant and have gathered a bit of extra info on the surname in Kent.

The only George I can find who most closely 'fits' that circa 1848 birth is George Simpson age 15 in the 1861 census for Maidstone Kent. This George was born in Maidstone and is living with parents John Liberty Simpson b. ca 1821 Maidstone, and wife Maria (same birth year) born Ulcomb, Kent.

Do you have the marriage cert for George in Australia? It may give his father' s name

Thanks so much for answering us. We're still looking for George and waiting and waiting... sometimes it seems a milion miles away, but we know it's only a case of getting that one piece of illusive information that will help.
We do have George's marriage certificate. It has nothing at all on it other than the Kent, England. His wife's entry was just as bad, but thankfully we already knew about her!
We've looked at the naming of the children and tried possibilities. The only family that we can totally fit George and Mary's children into is one we found on the LDS site that has George as being born abt 1842 to Jane Simpson  who then married Thomas Jeffs (George's father). The names actually fit perfectly but!!!!!! they're not in Kent! So the hunt goes on. I'll put George and Mary's family below, who knows, the names may help someone recognise him.

Hi there

I was amazed to find this site as at the moment im trying to trace back my family tree and George Simpson and Mary Ann are my great great grand-parents!!!

So im just wondering if you have come across anything more regarding their pasts?  Im not sure where i should be looking now!!

This may be too late for people, but I believe my answer has far more family lore attached
I was told that someone knew that George had been a cabin boy who jumped ship. SIMPSON was not his birth name - but it was his mother's. I have him as born in 1844 in Meopham, Kent, to George PARKER & Mary Ann SIMPSON. George was the bastard of Charlotte, Mary Ann's ancestry is more regular - daughter of Samuel SIMPSON & Eleanor BENNETT.
I'd be delighted to get a definitive disputation.
