Lorraine,

Almost Mission Impossible without more information !

Assuming you mean within the county of Northumberland, there is no short cut, such as a Surname Index for C1851, for Northumberland as a whole.

There are however Surname Indexes for all the individual census districts of Northumberland.... about 50/60 of them ! ( in the form of booklets and microfiches ) For example, there are 5 different indexes for Newcastle alone.

Have you any clues about which area in Northumberland your Francis might have been ?

Hello Michael

Thank you for replying I am looking for info. for a friend she is looking for a Francis Hankin, born 1841 from Hexham, Northumberland. We found him on the 1881 census married to a Barbara Moore, She has found a old photo with only ages on the back. The picture is of a family and looks around 1850' looking at the clothes. She was wondering if she was able to get a census of Francis and his family the two may match.
Does this information be of any help
Kind regards
Lorraine

Rain,

Looked at Surname Index for Census 1851 for Hexham area.

There were only two HANKINs in whole area.

At 2414-586 was 13 yr old William

At 2414-605 was 14 yr old Ann.

As theses two were individually on separate Folios, it indicates that they were each in households where there were the only HANKIN in that household.

Unfortunately I did not have access to the proper census pages, so could not see what their status was in "their" households... e.g. grandchildren, step-children or whatever.

At 2414-400 there was a HARKIN family
William 38, Ellen 30, Patrick 4 and Hugh 2.

But in the Hexham census district there were no other "near-things" to a FRANCIS HANKIN. !
