Linehan/Relihan families of Buttevant, possibly Grange
« on: Sunday 18 May 14 02:55 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to locate information regarding Irish ancestors whose children immigrated to the US between 1845 and 1853. I know that both families with surnames Linehan and Relihan lived in Buttevant and probably in Grange. We have a document indicating that a great great grand uncle was born in Grange, Buttevant in November 1818 by the name of Michael Linehan. His parents were Cornelius and Mary Linehan (my great great great grandparents ). Michael's brother was Edward J. and he was my great great grandfather born about 1827. Michael emigrated to New York, about 1848 and Edward followed in 1851. The Relihan family also lived in Buttevant. My great great great grandparents were Dennis Relihan and Johanna Connors Relihan. They emigrated to New York along with their children Cornelius, Ellen, Julia, and Margaret round about 1853. Ellen Relihan married Edward J. Linehan. It turns out that Ellen's brother Cornelius Relihan, married a Catherine Linehan, also from Buttevant. Catherine's father was Edward (not the Edward J mentioned above, but perhaps an uncle to Edward J).

I am trying to find any burial or birth information of these two families and would appreciate some guidance as to my best course of action toward that end. At some point in the next year or two I plan on making a trip to Ireland to see if I can locate the birthplace of my ancestors.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Chris Ivory

A search of the RootsIreland website brings back the following church baptisms for father Denis and mother Johanna Connors in County Cork: Cornelius Relihan, 1823; Ellen Rylahan, 1826; Honora Rylahan, 1828; and Margaret Rylahan, 1830.  The given parish is Buttevant Roman Catholic. The is also an 1821 church marriage for Denis Rylihan to Johanna Connor, again the parish is Buttevant Roman Catholic.

All record content is pay to view, just be aware that records of this era don't contain a lot of additional information.

Thank you very much Gaffy. I will have to investigate the RootsIreland website as well to see if there is any details on the Linehan side of the family.

My g-grand mother was a Mary Lenihan (1856-1919) born in Grange House, Grange, Buttevant, Her father was William Henry Lenahan and mother was Julia Madden.  Not sure is there is a connection.

BTW  RootsIreland is now a subscription model

Hi JJ,
There may be some relation there but I don't know for certain. Any idea how common the name Linehan was to the Buttevant, Grange area ? I do have the subscription to RI (ends tomorrow actually) and managed to find a couple more bits for the Relihan family of Buttevant (Ballinguile to be precise). I was
not able to find any birth info for Edward J. or Michael Linehan. It's possible that the "J" stands for John in which case I have something for a John Linehan  of Buttevant and the birth date appears to be about right.
I do know that based on a letter written by Cornelius Linehan in 1868 vouching for his son Michael, indicates that Michael was born in Grange, Buttevant Nov 1818.
Cheersm
Chris

There is a John Lenihan listed as a witness on Mary Lenihans baptism. I would assume most likely her fathers William's brother or father.
