Compatibility Quagmire
« on: Tuesday 13 May 14 09:27 BST (UK) »
I have windows 7 and when I try to test compatibilty of my printer/scanner Workforce 320 I get a message;
'Test compatibility for the program'
I get;
'Settings applied:'
'Windows compatibility mode: Windows XP (Service Pack 2)'  ::) ::)
'you need to start the program to make sure these new settings have fixed the problem.After running the program using these settings,click Next to continue.

Then there is a box which says 'Start the program' which I have done ... often.... to no avail. >:( >:(
I cant figure out why I have windows 7 that I am told that I have Windows XP ..... complete mystery?? and I need help. :'( :'(

The printer driver (in simple terms: the 'messenger' between the printer and your computer) is designed for Windows XP. Windows 7 has found this problem and so is going to run the driver in an XP mode. This means that the computer is working like XP for that printer only (the rest of the computer will work the same).

Think of it like the printer speaks Chinese and Windows XP speaks French. The driver you have at the moment can speak both Chinese and French and is a translator between the two. However, you have now updated to Windows 7 which speaks German. The original driver can't speak German and so can no longer be a translator. So Windows 7 is going to communicate to the driver (translator) through its French Windows XP friend.

Obviously that all makes total sense  ;) ;D

So that answers the first part of your question, Shaun's suggestion should fix the problem but let us know if it doesn't.

Hi Jack,

A very good analogy, even old codger like me understood that. Well done.

Lovely analogy and fully understood ........ not bad for an 87 year old codger.
However I am still in deep doodoo as the message I get now is;
Cannot communicate with the scanner.
Make sure the scanner is on,correctly setup and connected with no errors indicated.
(and it is)
For detailed information,see Solving Problems in the User's Guide.
The user's guide under 'solving problems' covers paper jams,fax errors,cartridge needs replacing etc but does not address my problem at all.
When I get in touch with the manufacturer I am bombarded with FAQ's that don't address the problem.
Then there is a box to click OK which one clicks on and it disappears.
Sadly Shawn's approach yielded nothing
What do I do ....... if I throw myself out of the window it won't kill me as I live in a bungalow!!

Is it a new printer?
Did you run a software setup?
or did you just plug it in?

Has this printer ever worked with this Win7 computer before ?
If no, did you run a software setup?
or did you just plug it in?
If yes, what happened to make you try acompatibility test?

Ray it was bought new some three years ago and came with a disc and was set up and ran well.
The PC that I had then was running on XP.
My son in law soon after bought  me a new HP PC which ran on W7 and the difference to XP was very hard for me as my files were not as easy to find.
A few days ago I tried to scan a photo to send overseas and whilst the scanner/printer made all the appropriate noises ... it did not function which made me look for reasons and then I ran a compatability test and found it was compatible with XP which I thought may have been a problem so I altered it to W7 thinking this would help but it did not.
Interesting thing is that I can print emails or photos from my photo storage but I just cannot scan.
