West Yorkshire Regiment Band? - Major S. S. Sykes. - Dating?
« on: Sunday 11 May 14 20:02 BST (UK) »
Hi all, attached is a picture of a regimental band. My great grandfather, Major Sykes, is in the middle wearing a hat and holding a walking stick. Major Sykes was in the West Yorkshire Regiment.

Is this the West Yorkshire Regimental Band? Are the symbols any indicator?

Kind Regards,

Good evening,

I would say no, the west Yorkshires badge was a white horse on a ground over a scroll saying "Hannover". Also the buttons grouped in 3s is the Scots Guards.

It is most likely a town or colliery band wearing a military style uniform or a reservists unit.

Good evening,

I notice on looking again that the bass drum has a shield on it. Can we have a close up at about 600 pixels just of the drum. It's the best clue there is as to what the band is.

Unfortunately I'm unable to get it any clearer than that, I do apologize.

Good evening,

That looks like a coat of arms although oddly it seems to have a picture of two people in the upper left quadrant. However, a military band would have the regt'l badge on the drums plus some battle honours. So I would say as before, a town or colliery band.
