Help with a Holywell Gravestone, Rickards, Hughes
« on: Thursday 08 May 14 16:46 BST (UK) »
I came across this gravestone from St Winefred's, Holywell on BillionGraves and they've transcribed one of the names on it as Maxwell Hughes 1797-1846 and his wife, Eliza Hughes (I'm presuming nee Rickards as this is a Rickards grave) 1796-1853. I cant find any record of this person existing. My interest is with the Rickards in this area as it is an almost unique surname in Flintshire. Is there anyone on here who has access to the 1841 Census who could search for these people for me?
TIA

No sign of a Maxwell Hughes but....
Marriage at Bagillt Holywell 03 Dec 1832  Joseph Hughes of the parish of Whitford and Eliza Rickards of this parish. Witnesses were Solomon Rickards and Mary Ann Jones (all four signed).

1841  Pen y bal, Holywell - all born in county
Joseph Hughes 40 Smelter
Eliza Hughes 40

next door:
Margaret Rickards 70
Elizabeth Rickards 25 Servant
Solomon Rickards 23 Book keeper
and in same house but with / shown so separate household was Elizabeth Jones who was either 20 or 28 (not clear on census).

1851  Pen y ball Street, Holywell
Eliza Hughes widow 50 Bonnet maker b. Holywell
Margaret Williams 22 Assistant b. Manchester
Elizabeth Jones 38 servant b. Bagillt

Margaret Rickards of Pen y Ball was buried at Bagillt on 15 Dec 1842 age 73 years.

Food for thought?

Wow, that was quick! Thank you ever so much for your help. The gravestone is not very clear, but it definitely doesn't say Joseph Hughes which is strange, unless Joseph had a brother and she married him also?
The rest of the family are correct, re Solomon, Elizabeth and Margaret, although Margaret's name is also unclear, but the dates match perfectly. The corrosion has definitely thrown up a mystery for me, but you have helped immensely, so thanks again.
Paul

Glad to help solve mysteries!

Burials at Bagillt, Holywell
Joseph Hughes  Penyball St. Holywell  26 May 1846 age 49
Eliza Hughes Penyball St. 21 Sept 1853

So it seems that Maxwell is Joseph - probably never know why.
