In a local newspaper dated 18 September 1914 - "News has reached here of the death of Captain Cox who was serving with the Belgian Army and who was brother to Mr. Cox of Nenthead,  He was assisting in the defence of one of the Forts in front of Liege on August 5th when he fell".

Mr. (JEAN) Cox was the Mine Manager at Nenthead, Cumberland for the Vielle Montagne mining company, his wife was named Elise and he had two daughters, Suzanne and Madeleine. So far as I know all were born in Belgium. 

Can anyone help with this family - i.e. birth, death and marriage dates and what happened to them after they left Nenthead.

We can't divulge details from the 1911 census - due to copyright issues!

But I looked on FindMyPast, and their index, which is free!

John Cox, born 1873
Elise Cox, born 1876
Madeline Cox, born 1898
Suzanne Cox, born 1899
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Spelling possibly Cockx or some other variant not Cox, if they were actually Belgian.
Henri Jules Cockx, b. Sint Gilles (Brussel) is a possibility for the brother of Jean.
He was not a Captain, but death record on 6th August 1914 and his burial location is Wandre (previously a separate place but now a part of Liege).

He also had a street named after him (this source says death on the 5th).

Just to add that, although the family are all marked as Belgian, Elise was born in France!

Thanks for taking the time to reply and pointing out that Elise was born in France.  I wonder why Henri had a street named after him. What did he do to deserve such an honour.

Henri appears to have been one of the first Belgian casualties, so perhaps it was related to that (or perhaps his brother was back in the area by that point and lobbied for it!)
