Taylor families, Rochdale mid 1600's and early 1700's
« on: Wednesday 07 May 14 00:29 BST (UK) »

Hi all
I am trying to find any living male Taylors who can trace their ancestry to the Taylor families of Rochdale Lancashire. Ancestral names such as  Zacharai, James, George, Richard and Edmund would indicate a link to the families I am seeking.
There is a possibility that the ancestors of President Zacary Taylor of the US originated here.
It seems that there were several Taylor families at Rochdale mid 1600's and later that bore these names.
Finding a living member of one of these families would enable a DNA test to be carried out to either confirm or disprove the connection.
If anyone can help please contact me.

I would like to add that it is the Zacharai Taylor that is the most important family that we are trying  to trace. He had 7 children baptised  at Rochdale from 1656 to 1666 and has possibly died there in 1682.
However his earlier children were at Flixton 1640, Manchester Cathederal 1644 to 1649 , and Bolton 1654 and 1655.
This Zacharai ( there are various spellings ) may not have originated in Rochdale. Any help in relation to where he may have been born would be very much appreciated.

heatherjulie,
Yes  that is one of the baptisims that I have attributed to this family. There were two at St Peters, Zachry 27 Mar 1654 and a Richard 13th Aug 1655.

heatherjulie,
I believe that the child Zachry b 1654 started having children in 1687 at Ormskisk Lancs, with Elizabeth,  followed by another 6 children Barbara 1694, Edward 1696, Abigail 1697, Orlando 1699, another Zacry in 1701, and Dorothy 1702. These were all christened at Wigan, Lancs.
My information has come from familysearch.org and is transcriptions. The christening you have quoted would appear to be from a Parish record, so it is good to have the entry confirmed.

The baptism for Zachry is from Free LancsOPC site.
There is also this marriage.

12 Jul 1685 St Peter and St Paul, Ormskirk
Zackery Taylor  Clerk, Of ye Parish
Barbara Stanly  Spinster Of ye Parish
    Married by Lycence

Well worth a look to see if you can find any more of your Taylor family

rolnora,
Thank you for the marriage, any information is helping flesh out the family, and may allow me to follow it further.

rolnora,
Thank you for the link to the extracted Parish records, it enabled me to find another child, Mary b 30 Apr 1686 for Zacrhry and Barbara. Also that Barbara died 3 Oct 1689 at Ormskirk.
Havnt found who he married before reuming to having children at Wigan.
Unfortunately some of the Parishes have not had the details for the early dates extracted yet, but a very usefull source.

Hello Wyanga,

I'm glad you found the site useful :)
Parish records are being added all the time so it's worth remembering to go back to it every once in a while.
Good luck with it :)
