Hello,
I wonder if someone could kindly look up
John OAKE born between 1808 & 1812 Newport, isle of Wight for me. His father was Timothy Oake.
If you are lucky to find anything on this John, (I have searched everywhere for him), any additional info on this family would be greatly appreciated,
Kind regards,

I was in Newport Record Office earlier this week and couldn't find your John Oake. There was however an Elizabeth Oaks born 13 Sept 1820 btp 7 Oct 1810 d/o Timothy and Mary Jane Oaks.

Hello Linda,

Thank you ever so much for going out of your way to look up my John Oake, greatly appreciated.
This Elizabeth Oaks that you found could be my John Oake's sister, however at present I have no way of corroborating it but will keep it in mind in case some further evidence comes up. There is a long line of Elizabeths in my Oake family which makes it look promising.

If you are familiar with the Newport area, would you know if there were a lot of Oake families around there in the early 19th c? And is there any on line site dedicated to the Isle of Wight?

This John Oake was my great, great grandfather and married my gg grandmother Sarah Augusta Goodger  March Q 1841 in Newington, London. On the 1851 census it states that he had a son John Oake born about 1837 Bermondsey, Surrey as it is before his marriage to my gg grandmother he must have been married before??? Can´f find birth for this son anywhere??? Big mystery?http://www.rootschat.com/forum/Smileys/classic/huh.gif

Once again, many thanks for your help & kindness,

Maria

Hi Shirl & CB53,

Thanks a million for this new info. This is a big breakthrough with John Oake's first marriage and death of his wife and the bapt. of his son John in Bermondsey. Printer & compositor fit in perfectly with other census data and he married the daughter of George Goodger who was the publisher of the Observer Newspaper from abt 1819 until his early death in 1836.
I had thought that perhaps George had introduced his son-in-law to the printing business but now it is obvious he was already a printer before the Goodger connection.

Once again, thanks very much for all your help,  I appreciate it so much,

Maria

Timothy Oake is a grocer on his son's marriage certificate. There are several mentions of Timothy Oake in the newspapers , mostly to do with insolvency , but one mentions the death of his eldest son Henry aged 12 in 1819 , buried 26 Sep 1819 Lymington. Timothy is a grocer , baker and sometimes a draper. The early references say he is of Ryde , Newchurch parish , not Newport, and the later ones Lymington. I cannot find a baptism for Henry , or for John , but there are several others :

Eliza 7 Oct 1810 Newchurch
Richard Mason 5 Dec 1813 Lymington
George Oake 28 Jun 1818 Lymington ( this would make him George Oake Oake - seems unlikely ! )
William Serrell 17 Sep 1820 Lymington
Ellen 9 Apr 1823 Lymington
Raymond 25 Sep 1825 Lymington
Mary Jane 29 Jun 1828 Lymington ( this one only states Non-Conformist )

Timothy Oake m Mary Jane Mason 4 May 1806 Lymington

Very frustrating that neither Henry nor John can be found !

Once again CB53 I have a depth of gratitude to you for all this new information, you are a real genius, how you have been able to find all this info. is just amazing.

I looked at the census records for John Oake again both the original and transcriptions, and they definitely state that he was born in Newport which is only 7 miles from Newchurch Parish.

It appears that Timothy Oake & Mary Jane moved to Lymington sometime between 1810 & 1813. Their son John had to be born after Henry in 1807 & before Richard Mason in 1813!

Once again, many thanks for all your help and kindness,
Maria
