I note that the mother was nee Rowe. A whole clan of Cornish Rowes' moved between NZ and Aus a lot. Most of them working in mining. Also Sth Africa. I wonder if you extend your search to the mining centres in NZ & Aus.
Most likely Mary had relatives amongst the mining community and during the depression in the 1880's work was hard to find.
