Carpenter Family Dublin Ireland
« on: Thursday 01 May 14 01:37 BST (UK) »
Looking for any information about the family of John Carpenter b.1735 d.1807.  Married Elizabeth Scherer b.1749 d.1811.

We think that he had a grandson or great-grandson, John Darrah Carpenter b.1849 in Dublin d.11-5-1925 1925.  He was married to Julia Moore b.10-10-1859 in Berlin, Germany d. 4-21-1926.

They had a son, Charles Lee Carpenter b. 9-13-1888 in Roane County, West Virginia d. 9-27-1926 in Rochester, Pennsylvania.  He was married to my great-grandmother Mary Juliette Davis b. 1897 in Middlefield, Ohio d. 1989 in Lutz, Florida.

We are missing at least one maybe two generational links between John Carpenter b.1735 and John Darrah Carpenter b.1849.  I would love to find the names for this generation.

Hi

Just reading your post and the date of birth for John Darrah Carpenter (1849) would make him 10 years old at the time of his marriage to Julia Moore in 1859.  Can you double check your dates and post an update?

Also do you have any certs for the marriage or death of John D Carpenter and his wife?

Cheers

Hello, Again!

I've been looking into your Carpenter family and I'm a bit confused as most of what I've found for them has them all born in the US:
Charles Carpenter b Sept 1888, West Virginia; his father John D Carpenter born June 1849 West Virginia; his father Amos Carpenter b West Virginia.

Now maybe I've got the wrong family but I would advise you to go back to the beginning with your research.  You seem to jump from Dublin to Berlin to the US which is quite unusual so I'd go right back to starting your research with your relatives.  Find out what they know or have (certs etc).  Then get the most recent certs e.g. your parents births and marriage, then grandparents deaths, births and marriages and so on until you get stuck.

Obviously if you've already done this you're well on your way but I would look again at what you put in your original post as the dates, names and locations don't seem to appear correct.

Hope I've been of some help.

Sorry Dathai you're right, I misread that detail but I still find the rest a bit unusual.

Lost and Found,

Sorry if what I posted was confusing.  The 1859 was not John and Julia's wedding date... it was Julia's birth date.  John's wife Julia was supposedly from Berlin; not the Carpenter family members.

The information I posted is all I have for now and it was from my Mother's records.  She obtained part of the information from family, and part from Ancestry.com.  I posted on here in the hopes that maybe someone on here would have more information, since this is all we've been able to find.

I am excited to see that you listed Amos Carpenter as John D's father; that was a piece I didn't have.  I would love to find out more about Amos.  I think there is one more generation between Amos and John that I'm hoping to find.

Thanks.

Hi LodgeLady

I read back over what you had posted and then what I had posted and I have to apologise.  It was late when I was reading it and I obviously hadn't taken it in properly.  Also, my replies don't seem very friendly, so I'm sorry about that.

What I did find is not exactly what you have but the names seem to match if not locations, which is why I wondered if you have any certificates to help verify what you believe to be true.  If Charles Lee Carpenter is your Grandfather then a good cert to start with is your Father/Mothers birth cert to confirm both your Grandparents names.  Next a marriage cert for your Grandparents and then a birth certificate for Charles Lee Carpenter to confirm who his parents were.  The reason I would recommend this is because without the certs it is not possible to be 100% sure of what you find.

What I have found is:
Charles Carpenter, b Sept 1888, West Virginia,
His Parents = John D Carpenter b June 1849, Virigina; Julia Moore b Oct 1858, Ohio; married 1878, Roane, West Virginia
John D Carpenter was the son of Amos Carpenter and Edith/Edie/Eda ?
Amos Carpenter was born between 1791-1803, Virginia
Other children of Amos and Edith include Myrtle, Sarietta, Hezekiah, Margaret, Rosella and Matthew.

Most of the above information comes from the US Census details for 1900, 1880, 1860, 1850 and 1840.

I hope this is of some help and if you can get the certs it would be great as none of it is definite without some evidence.

All the best.

Hello again

Just wondering could the information your mother gathered re. Dublin and Berlin be in relation to those towns in Ohio and Virginia?  Perhaps this is where your family goes back to rather than Ireland and Germany.

Hi LostAndFound,

Charles Carpenter was my great-great Grandfather.  I never knew him, as he and my Great-Grandmother divorced before I was born.

We are pretty positive that John Carpenter b.1735 was from Ireland, and family history has it that John D. Carpenter was born in Dublin in 1849, and came to the US as a stowaway on a merchant ship some time in the 1850's at a very young age.

I would like to see the information showing him born in Virginia.  I will message you my email address if you would be willing to share what you have.

I will get in contact with my Mom to see if we can track down birth and marriage certificates.

Thanks!
