HILLS/CAKEBREAD in Broxbourne COMPLETED
« on: Friday 24 June 05 22:37 BST (UK) »
Following research by HALS it would seem that William Hills and Sarah Cakebread, who married in Broxbourne in 1805 are my gggrandparents.   They baptised 8 children, Mary 1808, Sarah 1810, Susanna 1814, Martha 1816, William 1819, James 1821, Anne 1821 and Jane 1824, all in Broxbourne.    In the 1841 census  for Hoddesdon they have with them Martha 20 and John 14 who would be my ggrandfather.   There is no record of his baptism in Broxbourne/Hoddesdon although he gives these as his birthplace in all later censuses.

I would be very interested to hear from anyone else researching this family or that of Sarah Cakebread?

Would the parish register give the names of William's parents in the marriage entry?

Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi Forest,

I found the mariage entry of 11 Mar 1805 in the Broxbourne PRs whilst at HALS but regret no details were shown of Williams parents.  The witnesses were William Mason and Susannah Hollingsworth.
So far as Broxbourne baptisms are concerned, I found James 11 Feb 1821 and Anne 11 Nov 1821, but nothing for John during the period 1820-1829.

Thank you very much for looking that up Peter - despite John being so elusive.  Every little helps.

I was at HALs the other day and going through the early parish registers for Albury, Herts.

We noticed loads of Cakebreads in the early entries and I mean early they start in the 1500's and it's all hand written in really old Englsih, but thankfully the staff there are fantastic when it comes to the really hard ones.

Don't think I have any Cakebreads but I will double check

Hi Forest,

There are a couple records in the LDS/IGI that might be your Sarah:
SARAH CAKEBREAD Christening: 09 JUL 1786 Broxbourne, Hertford
Parents: WILLIAM CAKEBREAD & SARAH

WILLIAM CAKEBREAD Spouse: SARAH PECK
Marriage:  12 APR 1779  Broxbourne, Hertford

Also, here is a link to a site with more info on the distribution of the Cakebread surname:
http://www.denspages.co.uk/roots/cakebread/genfr.htm

I have Cakebread ancestors in Barley, Herts.

best wishes,
Gail

I don't know if this is of any interest but there is a gravestone in the village churchyard at Pirton, Hertfordshire. Henry Cakebread died 10th April 1758 in his 50th year.
I was raised in the village and have been researching my family roots but there does not seem to be a link to the Cakebread family, in the 1960's I was at school with a girl of that name, her family lived in Ickleford.
There is an excellent village website and it has a genealogy section so one of the village historians may be able to give you some info on where this Henry came from.
Regards
Gillian

Thank you very much for that Gillian.   No Henrys in my direct line so far but I'll keep it on record and will take a look at the village website.
