William Whitfield Wile
« on: Wednesday 30 April 14 20:53 BST (UK) »
He appears on the Liverpool War Memorial and on the War Memorial at Whitley Bay and also atStournaway, Scotland.  Can one person appear on so many Memorials, or are there three people with this same unusual name?

If there are people out there who live in Stournaway, Liverpool or Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear who could look on the War Memorial nearest to them and let me know what the inscription says, I would be very grateful.

Regards Vera

Probate index entry

William Whitfield Wile of 26 Vine Street South Shields  died on or since 7th Oct 1942 on war service . Administration to  Margery Alice Thomson (wife of George Thomson)

So  it seems "home" was neither Liverpool, Stornaway nor Whitley Bay !

Can I ask how do you know he appears on these memorials?

Thanks for your help, I've got the Probate record, he wasn't actually on a Monument at Stornaway, it was a list of people who had lived there and had fought during WW11, Whitley Bay memorial - sister-in-law says it is on there, she's seen it!!!  Liverpool - not sure where that came from.

The Liverpool Naval Memorial (which is what he is listed on on CWGC), is a listing of 1400 men who "have no grave but the sea":
http://www.cwgc.org/find-a-cemetery/cemetery/2048704/LIVERPOOL%20NAVAL%20MEMORIAL
From the info there, the connection is with his military service:
Quote
a number of officers and men of the Merchant Navy agreed to serve with the Royal Navy under the terms of a T.124 agreement, which made them subject to Naval discipline while generally retaining their Merchant Navy rates of pay and other conditions. The manning port established to administer these men was at Liverpool.

For the local memorials, if he had relatives there they may have submitted his name for inclusion. For example I wouldn't find it unusual to see one name on a memorial in an area where he grew up (submitted by parents) and another in an area where he'd been living (submitted by widow).  Equally, some men may be missing from their "local" memorial if the family moved away before the memorial was constructed.

It is still possible to ask for a relative to be added to a memorial:
