Hello, I'm trying to trace the movements of Lydia French Aylwin (b 1814) and her cousin George Aylwin (b 1799) both from London. According to a letter written by a relative, they arrived in NSW (am not sure if they arrived separately or together) and at some stage travelled to Chile, where they later married and had 2 children. I'm stumped as to how to find when they arrived in Australia, how long they stayed there and then moved on to Chile. Hoping someone who has access to shipping records can help me solve the mystery.

Assumed Lydia French Alwyn was an unusual name, but not so, as there was a Lydia French Alwyn on Ship 'Statesman' 1852 BUT age is 11.

I've found a George Aylwin [1828 NSW Census] who arrived in NSW on the ship "Hunter" in 1827 but it looks like he arrived with wife, Harriet and kids, Mary Ann and Mary. The record estimates his dob as 1797.

There is a Lydia French Aylwin [dob about 1841] who left London and arrived in Melbourne, Victoria on the ship "Statesman" in Sep 1852.  She was only 11 years old.  Often they registered dates are wrong so could this be your girl?

Yes, you'd think this name would be rather unique wouldn't you, but not so. This one travelling on the Statesman was in fact a niece of the elder one ... her father's sister!  :)

Thanks for the info on the George arriving with Harriet - that could be the answer to another mystery I have, but I know about the Lydia French Aylwin born 1841 ... she was in fact the niece of the one born in 1814.  She was emigrating with her parents and siblings to Australia. Thanks anyway.

Do you have any information on the family in Chile? Perhaps we can go at it that way.

Somewhat later on, but this record must surely be somehow connected to your lot:

This birth record is their grandson. Lydia and George had 2 daughters, one being another Lydia, who married Alejandro Urrutia, and this child in the record is one of their sons. Other than that, the information on George and Lydia is sketchy. George had a brother, Richard, living in Chile and he and Lydia went from NSW to visit him. Another researcher has a copy of a letter written by Richard, (when and to who I don't know) which says, in part:

My brother George went to New South Wales some years before me and William to the East Indies.

George used to pay me a visit for years, along with Lidia Aylwin, our cousin, daughter of Gulielmos Aylwin, dealer in copper and both died here a while back.”

Not sure when Richard went to Chile, but he married there in 1836 and died in 1877.

Lydia (the daughter of George and Lydia) was born in Chile in 1844 and died in 1925, aged 81.

The researcher in Chile has so far been unable to find any records for them ... their arrival in Chile, or their marriage, nor how and when they arrived in NSW.

Thanks for this. I'm not sure where they fit into the picture, but the tallow chandler bit is interesting as I've found other Aylwins in the family with that occupation.
