Parish Look UP Request
« on: Sunday 27 April 14 10:45 BST (UK) »
Hiya,

I am trying to trace information relating to my 4 x Great Grandparents Richard Dover and Sarah Miller.

Richard Dover was born circa 1772 in Langrigg, Cumbria.  He was baptised 7/11/1772 in Bromfield and died 1799 to be buried 31/7/799 in the Bromfield area.  Baptism records state his parents to be John Dover and Jane - but no other information is known about them.

He was married to Sarah Miller, who was born circa 1775 in Mealrigg, Cumbria and died circa 1801 and buried 12/5/1801 in the Bromfield area.  I haven't been able to find any baptism records to gain parents names or a date they got married.

They had at least two children.  John born circa 1796 in Cumbria and Mary (my 3 x Great Grandmother) born circa 1798 in Workington - and they would have been orphaned as small children - so who and where they went to live is also unknown.  I know quite a bit about the later life of Mary, but nothing about her brother John or any other possible siblings, though I suspect there aren't any more.

I would be especially interested to know where and when Richard and Sarah married and also where they were buried.

Thank you in advance for any help given.

With kind regards,

Natterjack

Thank you JeanGris,

Very interesting.  Though slightly confusing at present.  At least a new lead to follow concerning the marriage of John and Jane Jamson..... will have to do a look up search on the meaning of that surname now mind... I suspect it could be a variant of the surname Jameson though.

Thank you once again.

It might be worth looking on Carlisle Archives Centre records for Wills (CASCAT).

From the earlier Wills - there are the following - so it looks as though they were around Bromfield in the 17th c:
John Bromfield (Langrigg) 1678 WI (Will, Inventory)
John Yeo, Bromfield (Langrigg) 1746 WI 35 [163r]
Richard, Bromfield [Langrigg] 1668 W [189]

Lots of other earlier Wills at various places in Cumberland - Crosthwaite, Bassenthwaite, Appleby Wes.

Worth a look to see if there are later Wills - especially for the above Richard

Edit:  Just looked - the following Wills (I would think from your family)
PROB/1787/W380 John Dover of Longrigg, Bromfield
PROB/180/W110 Richard Dover, Yeo, Bromfield
PROB/1803/W406 Will Richard Dover, Bromfield, Yeo
