1871 Hackney
« on: Saturday 26 April 14 08:55 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find 39 Shrubland Road, Hackney or Dalston in the 1871 census. I've found 104-91 and 1-11 but 39 must be somewhere else. I've found them on RG10 323. I have looked in the index on Ancestry but my person is not noted. I know he was there since his address is noted on his uncle's will in January 1871.
WATKINS - Greenwich/Deptford 1760-now
FITCHETT - Berks 1790
BARTHOLOMEW - Hants 1860
GOLDING - Essex/Greenwich

The 1871 census was taken on the 2nd of April, so in theory it is possible he had moved.

So are you saying that numbers 11 to 91 are missing from the 1871 census?

What is your ancestor's name please? (Plus year and place of birth). Have you found him on the 1871 census or not?

Sorry for the questions - just trying to clarify.  :)

In 1871 part of Shrubland Road comes under Shoreditch (not Hackney).

No. 39 Shrubland Road is at RG 10/472 f 25 p 13, showing a PHIPPS family headed by Rt PHIPPS, banker's clerk.

Looking more closely, I think it's Rd PHIPPS (Richard), though indexed as Rt.

For finding addresses, you can use the official census street indexes at

I received this PM from Watto, which I will post here as it might help others:

His uncle, William Watkins, died in January 1871 and left Henry Watkins as the administrator. I've 3 possible Henrys and wish to know which he is. His address according to the will is 39 Shrubland Road, Dalston. I'm trying to find Henry's age which will give me, hopefully, a lead as to who he is. The census is confusing since many of the roads have changed names and the enumerator has noted them is a strange way. Thank you for the quick reply.

For the best chance of getting help, Watto might like to post to this board the details of the three candidates for Henry Watkins? And perhaps also tell us the date William Watkins' will was written?
