Lillico in Northumberland
« on: Wednesday 23 April 14 12:29 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to trace the marriage of my 2X great grandparents Robert Lillico and Mary Hay. Robert was born in 1829 in Lowick and Mary in 1830 in Doddington. I have looked at the local archives at Woodhorn but cannot find it and cannot find it on Ancestry. I have found their baptisms and can trace the family from 1861 to 1911. The only baptism I have been able to find at Woodhorn is for a son Robert at Warkworth in 1859. My direct descendant is their son John Lillico. I have his birth certificate which confirms his parents names.
Any help or advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks
David

Have you looked at irregular boarder marriages its possible they nipped across the boarder and had their marriage there

This seems to be the most complete list of all the places for irregular boarder marriages

http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/files1/family-records/irregular-border-and-scottish-runaway-marriages.pdf

On a separate point looking at the 1911 census Mary although a widow says she had been married 59 years. Going by her age what I think she actually means is she got married 59 years ago so suggesting a marriage around 1852 which would fit in with her and Robert's ages and the birth of their first (?) child c1853
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

I have Robert in 1851 as Robert Lylies as a servant. Their first child was Mary although in one census it has Ellen as the first child. Going through all of the census' from 1861 to 1901 it states they had 14 children. In the 1911 census Mary says that she had 9 children and 2 had died. I have found the two that died. The extra 5 children were probably grandchildren.

I do not know if Robert was a middle name or if it is another Mary Hay. I have 2 birth certificates for 2 sons that do not mention William. I do not have his death certificate yet. He died in 1898 in Chevington. He was buried at St Mary's. We have been to the graveyard but cannot find the grave. It is possible that there was no headstone or over time has disappeared.

Did you look in both St. John´s churchyard and the municipal cemetery? Most of the surviving stones in the churchyard are leaning against the wall and are very overgrown. The municipal cemetery is very large with many sections so it would be easy to miss a grave.
