Ann Wilson in Liverpool
« on: Thursday 17 April 14 19:05 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information regarding the life of (Julia) Ann Wilson prior to her marriage to William Haslam at St Peters, Bolton 5th November, 1865.

She was born in Liverpool around 1840/41 and her father was Joseph Wilson.  The name Julia doesn't appear on any records and may be wrong.  There is a Ann Wilson at an Industrial School in Walton on the Hill in 1851, but I'm not sure if this is her.  Her life before 1865 is a mystery.

Thanks for reading this message  :)

Hello Lizdb,

Thanks for the reply.  I'm afraid I know very little.  Ann's father was noted on marriage banns and I have not requested a marriage certificate.  Ann is very difficult to trace before her marriage in Bolton and then its very straightforward.  She seems to have had a good life, she had several children and died in 1920, age 78 according to the register.

Ann worked at a Bleach Works and lived in Breightmet and Ainsworth.  I wonder if she is difficult to find because it is her in the Industrial School and she was destitute.  I think I need a birth certificate, but require more information in order to proceed.

Thanks again  :)

Marriage 5th November 1865 at St Peter, Bolton, Lancashire, England
William Haslam - Full, Dyer, Bachelor, Harwood
Ann Wilson - Full, Spinster, Harwood
    Groom's Father: James Haslam, Bleacher
    Bride's Father: Joseph Wilson, Carpenter
Witness: Joseph Kay, (X); Ann Haslam, (X)
Married by Banns by: Henry Powell Vicar

so - Joseph was a carpenter .and both families were from Harwood ...is that the same place as Great Harwood ??...maybe you can find Joseph and daughter Ann in 1861 census in Harwood,Lancashire ??
is this the family in 1881 census ??

Harwood and Great Harwood are two different places.

The Genuki website has the following:-

Harwood near Bolton
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Harwood/

and Great Harwood near Blackburn/ Accrington (in the Hyndburn area)

There's also Little Harwood near Blackburn

Hello and thank you for all the replies,

Yes, that is the family.  The Carpenter information is new for me so that will help.  Harwood is in Bolton near to Breightmet where there was a very large Bleach Works.  The name Julia came from other family trees on ancestry, but I have never seen a record with the name used.  I have not found a census record in the Bolton or Liverpool areas with both Joseph and Ann together.

I really want to pin down a birth record for Ann so I can obtain a certificate and find confirmation of her parent's names.  I would also like to know a little of her life before she married William.

Once again, thank you for all your help with this  :)

the marriage record tells us she was born 1844 or earlier - as she is 21 or older in november 1865
the census gives her as 27 in 1861
so I would say born 1843 or early 1844...
mar qtr 1843 - mar qtr 1844 only shows one Ann Wilson b Liverpool

mar qtr 1844 WILSON Ann   Liverpool   20  407

3 baptised in 1844 in Liverpool
Ann WILSON
17TH July St Peter - Joseph and Mary as parents
10th Sept St Peter - Joseph and Janet as parents
21st Sept St Catherines - Thomas and Elizabeth as parents ...
as Ann was married at St Peter - she was probably baptised there as well ??
sothat leaves 2 baptisms at St Peter - BOTH fathers are named Joseph ...so Anns father was probably a Joseph Wilson ????
did William and Ann have children names Mary or Janet ??...may point towards to her mothers name ?

Hello Garstonite,

Thank you for your reply and all the information.  I have all the census records for Ann after her marriage and her death record.  The census ages give a birth range from 1841 to 1846.  Her death record suggests 1842.  If we can now eliminate 1845 and 1846, we are down to just three years.

Her marriage was at St Peter's Bolton and her birth place is stated as Liverpool on all census records.  St Peter's Bolton is an Anglican Church.  I don't know when and why she moved to Bolton, but we do now know she moved to Harwood, Bolton, where she met William.

William and Ann had three children (I am aware of) and they were named Charlotte Ann, Alfred and Arthur.  Charlotte is William's mother's name so Ann could be a strong possibility.

Once again, thank you for your help  :)
