John Morgan/ Madge Christie
« on: Tuesday 15 April 14 22:29 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
Trying to find Information on a John Morgan/ Madge Christie. They fostered my uncle Thomas Cuthbert born 1904 Edinburgh, both his parents had died by the time he was aged about 13yrs old and he changed his name to Thomas Morgan on his Marriage Cert. He had 5 brothers John 1891/ William 1896/ Daniel1900/ Alexander 1902/ George 1907 & 1 sister Mary 1889.but we  think they also fostered his brother George. George kept his original name Cuthbert. On Uncle Tommy,s Marriage in Ayr it said that both John & Madge had died. Tried to find their deaths on Scotlands People with no luck. Can,t seem to find anything out about John & Madge. Just wandering if anybody has them in their family tree. Thank you.

Hi

Although Madge can be a name in its own right - it is also a "pet" name for Margaret or Marjorie/Margery

Did the Morgan's live in Midlothian or Ayr?

Is any occupation shown for John Morgan on Thomas's marriage cert

Quote
1 sister Mary 1889.

Think you mean 1899 - she is 2yrs old in 1901

Hi,
On Uncle Toms Marriage it said John was an Engine Driver. Thomas was born in Edinburgh & Married in Ayr. On Toms Marriage his name was Thomas Joseph Stanley Morgan, on is death It said he was  formally Known as Stanley Joseph Haddow. On his birth its down as Stanley Joseph Haddon.
We looked for a marriage Of John & Madge (Margaret) but could not find one We  .don,t know were they came from and we can,t seem to find a death. I was wandering how he married as Morgan and not as Cuthbert as there was no adoptions at that time. It would have been nice to find out something about his foster family. Just hoping some one might have had them on their family tree, just took a long shot.

I'm ok with him adopting the Morgan surname when he married but how is his birth cert in the name of Haddon if he was born as Thomas Cuthbert?

Hi Carolew,
Just checked his birth certificate and it said Stanley Joseph Hadden Cuthbert so I don,t know where the Thomas comes from. Also his brother George was born just as George Cuthbert But ended up as George Hadden Beattie Cuthbert by the time he died.

Have you checked the 1911 census for a John Morgan in Midlothian.  If Thomas was orphaned by 1917, I would have expected the Morgans to have been married by 1911

I have checked a couple of John Morgans in the 1911 census but they don,t match his wifes name or what his job was.

Hi

This may be pure coincidence . In the 1901 census there is the following entry in Blairgowrie, Perthshire:

Madge Christie Head 35 b Blairgowrie Teacher of Cookery
Jane Cuthbert Sister 43 b Blairgowrie Solicitors Wife
James A Cuthbert Nephew 2 b Alloa.

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)
