My fathers Sporting Achievements- Gravesend,Kent
« on: Sunday 13 April 14 05:35 BST (UK) »
By giving you our background, I am hoping you can help.
Everything relating to our late father was destroyed by our mother, (she has four children and none of us speak to her, so I let you draw your own conclusions). However, my sis and I managed to acquire dads medals, although it turned out mother had sold all the medals that were gold and silver, But as we have them, we are hoping to find any written evidence/record, too date we have not had much luck, we have only just started to try and find out about his past because we want to find out why he would never talk about his army years, but has Army athletic medals and a life saving award.
I remember my grandmother had a houseful of glass bowls and trophy's (all sold by my mother) so the medals are a small part of his success.
I digress.
My dads Name was Ralph Harry Thomas Burgess and he was born in Stroud, Kent (1929) but lived in Gravesend, His father was also a Ralph and his mother was Florence.
We are at a loss as to where to start looking as, with exception to his army medals most of the others are undated, but refer to AAA Gravesend, which we presume are school/college sports, we know he travelled around and was a member of a running club and once ran at white city. Our problem is we have no idea how many schools or colleges there where in Gravesend or the surrounding areas and do not know the running club he belonged to, thanks to our dear mother thinking she would make sure we got nothing!
I do so hope that the people on here are up for a challenge.
Thanking you all in advance

I think AAA would stand for Amateur Athletics Association and Gravesend the club he ran for.  If they are still in existence you could start there.
James -Victoria, Australia originally from Keynsham, Somerset.
Janes - Keynsham and Bristol area.
Heale/Hale - Keynsham, Somerset
Vincent - Illogan/Redruth, Cornwall.  Moved to Sculcoates, Yorkshire; Grass Valley, California; Timaru, New Zealand and Victoria, Australia.
Williams somewhere in Wales - he kept moving
Ellis - Anglesey

Hi

I would also recommend that you search in local newspapers. The British newspaper archive would be a good place to start. I came across quite a lot of reports of my family's sporting achievements on there.
