McClure family County Cork
« on: Sunday 13 April 14 02:21 BST (UK) »
It's been a while since I have posted and I want to thank all who helped.

My grandfather was Thomas McClure son of James and Ellen McClure, Thomas I believe had a twin sister Maggie or Margaret there was also a son William and another Robert born in Scotland.

It would seem that most of this family were born and died in County Cork. I'm wondering how Robert came to be born in Scotland. I believe Ellen McClure died about 1920 in Cork. There may be other family members that I am not aware of. James McClure's occuapation was an engineer I wonder what type of engineer? I am really not very good at this and like many folks I did not ask my dad all these important questions. Thomas my Grandfather died as a result of his ship being Torpedoed  by a German Sub during WW I he was a Bosun on the Rio Verde and died in 1918. I have tried to get his Mercantile Marine  records however they don't seem to be available may have been distroyed by accident.
 McCLURE, THOMAS
United Kingdom
Boatswain (Bosun)
Mercantile Marine
S.S. "Rio Verde" (London)
31
21/02/1918
Son of Ellen and the late James McClure; husband of Mary Bridget McClure (nee White), of 35, Hyndland St., Partick, Glasgow. Born at Crosshaven, Co. Cork.
(Died at sea of Bronchopneumonia cardiac failure) The cause of death is as noted however I believe this to be incorrect as he died as a result of his ship being sunk and the body was not recovered. Any information on Births-Deaths or other family members would help me try to piece together my family history......Thanks for any and all help or suggestions
Best Regards, Bruce

the 1911 census tells you Ellen had been married for 41 years,,,so you need to look for a marriage between a James McClure and an Ellen   c 1870

it also tells you she had 10 children,,,only three of which were alive in 1911.

you can download Thomas McClures medal card from the national archives for a small fee,,,or if you have access to Ancestry,,you can get it from there,,,,,the card wont tell you much,,,but will tell you his medal entitlement...I think the born in Cusshaven is a mistranscription of Crosshaven

re his records...see this guide,,,,it looks like no records survive for the period you are interested in,,,but you may find something by looking for him in the crew lists if you have the name and number of the ship,,,,but looks like these records are not online,,,and would involve a trip to Kew.

Hello Mike: Sorry if I did not follow protocol with my post. I sincerely appreciate the help you have provided.
I have not done any serious work on this for a while I have been trying to find information on my great grand parents. That would be James McClure and Ellen McClure nee Coleman In the 1901 census it shows them living in two different dwellings and shows Ellen as being the head of household and James living as a border. It would seem that perhaps they were divorced which seems a bit out of line for those times but I can't find any record of the divorce. Have tried to search for birth records on Ellen and James to find out the names of their parents..did not have any luck or else I'm not looking in the right place. I found what I believe is Ellen's year and place of death but nothing for James. I'll keep looking and perhaps with a little Irish luck I will continue to trace my ancestors
Best Regards, Bruce

Hello Bruce,
Checking through the Marriage Index, it looks like James McClure and Ellen Coleman were married in 1872 in Kinsale, Co. Cork Registry District, reference 10-207. If you apply for a copy certificate, this should give you the names of their fathers and probably other clues for further research.

Their son James was born 15 April 1879 at Crosshaven Hill, Carrigaline, Co. Cork.

Hello ARTRASNNAN: I appreciate the information you provided. Where I was running into trouble was finding any information on James McClure. I had noticed in the census that it showed Ellen, Thomas, and Maggie and Ellen as the head of household. OK...so what happened to James?? Thomas was my grandfather. He was a Merchant Seaman and was killed as mentioned in my previous post. The records for the ship (Rio Verdi) and Thomas McClure  are not available I have tried to find anything about his service but no luck. Even a search for him on other ships did not produce results. Now I must tell you I am no expert on these things...I seem to just stumble along. So any tidbit of information is like I found that pot of gold! I will see if I can obtain a copy of the marriage certificate for James and Ellen in Kinsale 1872. Thank you very much
Best Regards, Bruce
