Hi there, you originally asked for information on Alfred George Durham and I see on FreeBDM there is an Alfred John Durham and an Alfred George Durham both born in 1865 but in quite different parts of England, one Gloucester/Worcester the other up round Lincolnshire way, where was your Alfred George Durham born in England?
Regards,
Craigt.

Hi shebalee

* Is it Alfred DURHAM, the son of William George DURHAM (s/o William James and Margaret nee JACKSON) that you are looking for ) ?    [Seem to recall Wm. George from your other DURHAM search. ]   ;)

If so, then Alfred John DURHAM d. 1928 at Waihi, is the correct man.

There was only one appearance, in 1871, of Alfred (John) on the UK census returns (with his parents and elder brother) and unfortunately the index had the children named as "W Lo" (son aged 6) and "Aliz Fo" (son aged 5).   ;D   [I read the actual image as children "Wm. F. - age 6 - b. Islington, Middlesex" - (and there's a baptism record, London, showing he was "William Frederick DURHAM") ... and "Alfd. J?o" -(probably "Jno" the abbreviation for the name "John") - aged 5 - b. Peterboro', St. Marks. ]

Transcript of census 1871 > next post :

Don't know if you already have marriage of Alfred John's parents ??

20 December 1862 - at Trinity Church, Stepney, (London) Middlesex

William George DURHAM - Clerk, G.N. Railway - s/o William James DURHAM - accountant, Dec'd.
Ellen* LYNCH - d/o James LYNCH, cooper

[Note:  * Bride signed the marriage register as "Ellen" :  NZ records show her death (1893) as "Hellen" DURHAM. ]

Just returning to your earlier questions :

Electoral

In 1890, Alfred John DURHAM, appears on 2 rolls - at Newton (Auck) and East Coast.

Newton - 1890

DURHAM - Alfred John - engineer
DURHAM - William George - Commission Agent
... both residing at Richmond Road - both have a "residential" qualification.

East Coast - 1890 - Supplementary* No. 3 roll
DURHAM - Alfred John - Maketu - engineer

[*  It would seem that Alfred John moved from Auckland during 1890 as he appears on the Supplementary roll (of late enrolments) in the East Coast district. ]

Note:   On some of the later electoral rolls, Alfred's occupation is described as "fitter".

Here's a link to the Waihi Cemetery, where you can find records for Alfred John and Annie.

http://property.hauraki-dc.govt.nz/cemetery/cemetery_search.asp

Alfred and Annie also had a son - named William Frederick DURHAM (possibly in honour of Alfred's brother b. England 1864, but who's death I can't see in NZ).

NZ Birth

1898 - DURHAM - William Frederick
Parents:    Mother (name not shown on online index) :   Father:  Alfred John

William (a miner) is with his parents in 1922 living at Barry Street, Waihi.

Sadly he died in 1925 and is buried at Waihi in plot with his mother, Annie.

Archive's "Archway" site has a number of references to William Frederick DURHAM (Coroner's report / Probate file - Letters of Administration/ and under Waihi Mining Registrations, files which includes references to his sisters, Ellen GEORGE and Ethel May DURHAM.)

Shebalee ... just digressing slightly ... you'll see that there is also an Alfred DURHAM d. 1928, buried at Waihi Cemetery.     I'll go back to your other thread "Seeking 2 DURHAM brothers" and add information to that.   ;)

Alfred was  born in England.
He was born in 1865-1928

PS not sure when he arrived in New Zealand any help there be lovely too .........thanks

Now, fortunately for this branch of the DURHAM family, there was also another son (Harry) born to William George and Ellen DURHAM shortly after the 1871 UK census, and this son became a well-known citizen in Auckland.    His obituary explains where the family were after leaving England.  (see following post).

Free BMD (UK)

BIRTHS - DEC - 1871

DURHAM - Harry James     -  Registered: Peterboro' (Peterborough, Northamptonshire)
