identification of group photo, individual photo - help please
« on: Wednesday 09 April 14 21:01 BST (UK) »
I have found this group photograph among family photos along with individual who appears to be wearing similar uniform. Can anyone identify the uniform from either photo. I am hoping it is Royal Field Artillery as I believe the individual is a family member who was in RFA 75th Bde. What about location of group photo or is that pushing my luck?
The reverse of group photo is French "Carte Postale" and there is a partial address for photographer/printer "uilleminot. Baesptlug et Cie - Paris."
The reverse of individual photo is "Post Card" in English with no photographer's name.
Thanks,
Chwiliwr

Thank you Ady.
The information about the 2 year good conduct stripe is very interesting as he entered theatre of war in Sept 1915 (I have no record of when he enlisted) and was killed in Cambrai in Nov 1917. This suggests to me that photo was taken in 1917, and yet he had rank of sergeant (one newspaper report gives him a rank of sgt.major) when he was killed. No sign of his stripes in the photograph though. Could he have gained rapid promotion as numbers became depleted?

I find that I have  2 photos taken in the same garden of this same house, one identified as
B battery 79th Brigade RFA.. if this is indeed a 75th Brigade man, that is interesting .. as another clue in tracking down the location of this billet. .. ...He may have moved Brigade [as many did as batteries were shifted around]. Any possibility for a higher resolution image of men.. and uniforms.. as badging/medals/faces may suggest a date for the photo .. and it may be possible to recognise some officers or NCOs  ... it must be summer 1916 or 1917 by the trees

Has a photograph with this location not been posted before?

The group photo I have is only 14cm x 8cm so don't know how much better it will reproduce. Also I believe there is restriction on file size for attachments. If you send me personal message with your e mail I will scan at best resolution I can and send attachment by email.
It would be good to be able to find the location. As for my great uncle having moved brigade I have no idea. The only information I have on his brigade is from CWGC at his death.
