Hi
I would look for any Long family in the Dudley area, if he was illegitimate his mother may have married a Long, after he was born, and Edward has taken the Long name

Family History is a Pandora's box if you don't like what you see find a new hobby, only concentrate on the proven facts and not the facts you think you know.

The Queens Cross area of Dudley would fall under St Thomas' parish records. According to the IGI, the only Edward Long christened there between 1854 and 1864 is a William Edward Long, born 3 Nov 1860 to William Long and Mildred Ann.

I couldn't find any further trace of Mildred, so I checked the marriages and I think that somewhere there was an error, because there is a marriage record for William Long and Margaret Ashwood (2nd Sept 1860)

Definitely not the Hanley castle Edward because of the 1881 census.

in the 1901 census Edward was a bit more specific as he said he was born in Queens Cross, Dudley.
He may not have known where he was born, if he grew up in Dudley then it's possible he's just assuming that was where he was born
