Talbot Inn, Halifax
« on: Tuesday 08 April 14 18:35 BST (UK) »
There appear to have been several inns of that name in the Halifax area. I am interested in the one that was in Woolshops which appears to have closed in 1918. Is this the same place as The Talbot Hotel where an important meeting took place in 1769 of Lord Rockingham and the justices & gentlemen of Halifax to discuss how to put a stop to the Coiners activities?
Toby.

There is the Talbot Inn on Woolshops on an 1852 map which is labelled Talbot Hotel on the 1890 map.

The other Inns of that name in the area (that I know of) are in Illingworth and Elland, which are about 3 and 3.5 miles from the town centre respectively.  Considering Lord Rockingham is supposed to have stayed at what is now Somerset House in the town centre, a couple of minutes walk from Woolshops, it seems likely that you've got the right one.

Bear in mind I'm not an authority on the topic at all.

Thanks Nostromo. I feel we are more than half way to confirmation. Toby.

I would like to find Woolshops in the 1911 census but that seems quite difficult compared to most of the earlier censuses for there is no page 1 giving a description of the district. It was suggested to me that I should get my daughter to look for Summary Books but she has not been successful . Can anyone help. Thanks, Toby.

I found The Talbot Hotel from your figures and it was at 40 Woolshops. This seems to confirm that Inn & Hotel were the same place. Thanks. Toby.
