Elizabeth Long
« on: Thursday 03 April 14 14:17 BST (UK) »
???I am still searching for a way to access my gr grandfather's family (Miller). In 1850 he died in Gibraltar but I can not access any death record. His widow, Elizabeth, gave birth to his son in Jan 1851 also called Charles Miller and I have his birth certificate. Elizabeth returned to the UK and later married John Voll, also from Gibraltar. I have traced them through the census returns and know that Elizabeth came from Tewkesbury originally. She died in 1911 at Kingston on Thames.
I have no firm dates of birth for either of my gr grandparents and can find nothing out about Charles Miller senior other than that he was a Convent Guard on Gibraltar.
I am hoping for some advice as to how I can finally get somewhere with my research. Is there anyone out there searching the Long family from Gloucestershire, or with link to Gibraltar. ???
Searching on line in really my only option as travelling to the National Archives is not easy. :-\

Hi and welcome :)

Elizabeth Voll was recorded as aged 85 when she died in Kingston - death registered Jun qtr 1911 (so born abt 1825-6).  Is that consistent with her age through the censuses you've found?

Where did her marriage to Charles Miller take place, and have you a maiden name for her*? Were there children other than Charles b 1851?

*Sorry, I now see that you've called her Elizabeth Long in the thread title - was that her maiden name?

Hi,

Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of where Elizabeth and Charles were married. When I have looked at the census returns her age seems consistent. I have tried looking for her birth in Gloucestershire but have had no luck - and have tried looking on 1841 census and subsequent one to eliminate possibles and tried cross referencing some of them with possible marriages in that county. Very time consuming and a bit mind boggling but have had no success. I did wonder if Elizabeth didn't marry until their arrival in Gibraltar, whenever that was or if they married at a port/garrison town prior to sailing. Getting any help from Gibraltar sites has been a bit of a lost cause.

It looks as though her second husband's full name was John Abraham Voll (died aged 55, Dec qtr 1874 Hackney).  His birthplace as given as Hackney in both 1861 and 1871.

Have you found her marriage to John Abraham Voll, and does it give her father's name and occupation?
