cox family - advice needed.
« on: Tuesday 01 April 14 14:30 BST (UK) »
Hi have been researching my cox family.Have i reached the end of the road?  Have maria cox in 1841 census in aberystruth .she is residing with the arble family who have quite a few lodgers.maria is shown as cock not coxand of no trade.also lodging there is william button. believe maria had travelled to aberystruth from somerset to marry william.they were married crickhowell 1841.i have traced william back to frome .his father was aaron button.on wedding cert marias father is named as james cox. having presumed maria came from frome also i have looked at records c1820/21 for her bapt.so far i have found a maria cox born 30.6.1819 bapt 5.8.1820at holy trinity frome.but there is also a maria cox bapt 8.12.1822 at westbury and guess what parents of both are james and mary cox!!! looking at records there are lots of james coxs. on the 1851 census maria is still living at aberystruth along with her daughter caroline button aged 8 and son charles aaron button aged 7.caroline was born in frome.marias husband william is in bromley middlesex (maria and children have joined him there in 1861 and they have had two more children. )in 1851 census maria is residing with john cox and his family at aberystruth.john is 6 years older than maria and could be her brother. he is married to martha. john gives his place of birth as rode somerset his wife martha gives her place of birth as milverton somerset. i have looked for john cox but after finding lots of john cox marrying lots of marthas all over somerset but not in rode!

My question as someone recent to family history do i assume the maria born in frome in 1819 is mine? Or should i keep trying to find john cox in rode and try and trace the cox family back that way.or is there not much likihood that i will ever be able to trace the cox family back further than maria.? Any advice appreciated.

She does give her place of birth as frome same as william on 1861 census.on 1851 gives her age as 31. On 1871 just gives somerset. do u think i can take it as read that it is frome?  Is rode very near to frome? thanks for your reply

I am just worried that this would be the only evidence i would have for saying this is my maria. for all i no they could have just put frome down as nearest big town? I have had other relatives on different branches give different places of birth on each census!!

Rode is about 5 miles from Frome, have you found John's baptism in Rode? I would try and trace both families with parents James and Mary both in Frome and Westbury, see if there are siblings, were they still around in 1851 to give a clue to birthplace etc. Are there any other Cox baptisms in Rode?

Also try checking John Cox after the 1851 census, does he consistently state Rode as a birthplace? It's a bit like a jigsaw puzzle but you may just find a clue.

Good luck

Thanks so much alli.
John is in the 1851 aberystruth census as a labourer. Sadly it dies not give his relationship to Maria Button( nee cox) so they may not have been brother/sister but only cousins. Thankyou for taking the time to look up the above which i will look into further
best wishes
