Walker Street, King Cross, Halifax
« on: Tuesday 01 April 14 07:56 BST (UK) »
Hi All
My Grandmother, Ethel Hollinrake 1892-1969 was born in Blenheim Street, Hebden Bridge. The 1901 census records her living at 16 Walker Street, King Cross and the 1911 records her living in the same street but at number 26. At some point prior to 1916 when my father Willie 1916-1978 was born, she was back at number 16. She worked most of her life at the Baldwin & Walker wool mill also in Walker street. My grandmother moved to a maisonette in Illingworth in the mid 1960's just prior to the houses in Walker Street being demolished.

As a child I remember going to Walker Street many many times but, sadly, I have no photographs of the street. If there are any kindly souls who have photos that they could possibly share with me it would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards from Penang, Malaysia

Keith

There is a chance that the local authority could have taken photographs of the area as part of the preparations for building Aachen Way that now runs over the site.  I suppose it's unlikely anything like that survives, but it might be worth asking.

"Halifax Courier" might help, especially if there was a story for them in it. There's also a local history section in Halifax library, perhaps they may respond to a request? Worth a try.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

Thank you for the replies to my post. I know it was a bit of a long shot hoping that someone might possess a photograph but it was worth a try. I have just contacted the Courier  so maybe they might have something.

Thanks again
Keith

hi from plum   my wife used to work at Baldwin and walkers  walker street was at the back of what is now a Dr.s surgery. some one has said the Halifax courier to see any thing from this source you will have to go to the Halifax library on northgate , from Halifax bus station 5min walk out at the top turn left and keep on the left hand side of the street you can't miss it, they are very helpful plum
