Hi,

I am looking for information on the family of

Daniel J Quill and Anne (Morris) Quill married 28 Feb 1876 Cumberland, RI

Children:

Mary Ann Quill                1877 - ?          (9 yrs old in 1886)

Annie Quill                      1878 - 1878

Ellen Quill                       1879 - ?          (7 yrs old in 1886)

Margaret Ann  Quill          1882 - ?          (4 yrs old in 1886)

After Margaret's birth they moved to Chesterfield, Chesterfield, Va  where

Daniel John Quill Sr  died  1852 (Ireland) - 9 Feb 1886

and Daniel John Quill Jr was born 12 July 1886 & died on 4 July 1887

After this I hit a brick wall can't locate Anne (Morris) Quill or the kids anywhere and the death record I have doesn't give any cemetery info so I can't find out if Anne Quill is buried with Daniel & their son Daniel Jr.  Anne was born on 2 Feb 1854 in Stockport, Cheshire, England to Michael Morris and Mary (Geraughty) Morris. 4 siblings, Mary, Margaret John & Ellen, family immigrated to New Bedford, Mass then moved to Lonsdale, RI then Michael & Mary moved back to New Bedford, Mass

Patrick Quill and Ann Looney are Daniel Quill's parents his brother is buried in Valley Falls, Rhode Island haven't located any siblings other than Michael and don't have an origin point for the Quills in Ireland.

Any help in tracking down this family in Chesterfield, Va would be greatly appreciated.

Maria

Do you have any death dates for her siblings?  Maybe an obituary would indicate if Anne was still alive, where she lived, if she remarried, etc.

Given the details on Daniel/Annie's marriage:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F8VL-Z86

This is probably sister, Ellen, m. 1883 to John P McCabe:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F8VL-XNJ
And Margaret m. 1890 to James Carr
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F8K3-QZL

Well, here's one of the kids - "Maggie Quill" b. Rhode Island is in 1900 living with granddad "Michael Morris" b. England down in South Carolina (!)
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M3RS-GQN

A possible birth for a child to daughter Ellen in MA in 1897, although I can't spot marriage or records for her or this child after this:

There is a family tree that says Ellen lived in Providence, RI in 1900 (listed as Helen McCabe) & 1910 and died 3 Nov. 1928 in Pawtucket, RI.  (Here is the death record - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F84T-GR8)  It also says that Michael Morris died 19 May 1907 in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Michael Morris' death certificate gives his residence as 120 Divison St. - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-12378-160986-36?cc=1463156

The 1906 New Bedford city directory has John Morris at the same address.  The 1907 New Bedford city directory has Margaret Quill, weaver, home 120 Division.  No Morris or Quill at that address in the 1908 directory.

There is an e-mail address given for obituary inquiries at the New Bedford library - http://www.newbedford-ma.gov/Library/search.html  It might be worth checking if there is one for Michael.

Hi jorose and Shellyesq

Thank you for the new information! Margaret Carr, Ellen McCabe and Mary Morris Greene of Lincoln, RI are Anne Quills sister's. Margaret Carr died in childbirth in 1894 same year her son John James Carr was born. Ellen McCabe died in 1928 in the Institution of Mental Health (IMH) Cranston, RI 1928. Mary Greene I haven't found this information yet.

I have been using the Civil War Widow's Pension files of my great, great grandmother Mary Morris Crowe to trace the whereabouts of my great, great, great, uncle Michael Morris and his family. The documents say they left Lonsdale, RI in 1877 which I took to mean Michael Morris, Mary Geraughty Morris, and son John Morris; as I found the 1880 Cumberland Census for Mary, Margaret and Nellie Quill working in a cotton Mill. The documents go on to say the family ended up at 206 County St New Bedford, Mass in 1896 - 1898 which is when Michael & Mary's depositions were taken. I found his death certificate and knowing he died in 1907 "assumed" he was in New Bedford, Mass from 1877 - 1907, it never would have occurred to me to look in South Carolina records; so thank you very much for this information!

This also gives me the time period for great, great, great aunt Mary Geraughty Morris's death and where to look!  I found the birth certificate for Beatrice Prevost (Provost?) in Boston, Mass thought this could possibly be a child for Ellen Quill, but no marriage information has surfaced, thank you very much for thedirectory listings for John Morris and Margaret Quill!  I was having great difficulty tracking John Morris as well as the Quills and every bit of information helps!

Thanks again!    Maria

At familysearch there is a set of images (not name searchable) entitled Massachusetts, Town Clerk, Vital and Town Records, 1627-2001 which includes some records for New Bedford, it would be worth having a look through to see if there's any more records for the family:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list?page=1&countryId=52

This may be Mary Morris Green's marriage, despite the wrong father's name.

Hi Shellyesq,

I found the 1906 New Bedford Street Directory online and now have a copy of the page showing John Morris 120 Division Street. However; in the 1907 directory I found,  Mrs Nellie Kiaser, Robert Mcleod, and James J Dodds living at 120 Division Street and no Margaret Quill,  weaver.  I'm looking at the New Bedford 1907 Directory, by W.A. Greenough & Co;   Compilers, Printers, & Publishers,  No 8 Oliver Street Oliver Building Boston, Mass.  If this isn't the same directory could you provide the link to the page?

With the info provided by you & jorose we've narrowed down the time period of unaccounted for years in the Morris family history from 1877 - 1907 (30 yrs) to several blocks of unaccounted for yrs; the first being 1877 - 1896 (19 yrs) I couldn't find any trace of them in directories prior to the 1897, 1898 directories. Apparently Michael took the family directly to Lonsdale, RI after they arrived in 1870 then left there in 1877 for ? He reappears in New Bedford, Mass for 1897 & 1898 disappearing again until 1900 in South Carolina with Margaret Quill his granddaughter, then goes off the radar until he dies in New Bedford, Mass in 1907.  I've still got blanks to fill in, but a lot less than I started with!   Thanks Maria
