Help in dating photo
« on: Saturday 29 March 14 23:51 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping someone can date this photo and also work out the age of the woman for me please. The photo was taken in Tasmania, Australia or New Zealand.

I'm not sure but think those hats were from the Edwardian period. I'll stick my neck out and say late Edwardian, then wait for China or Jim to shoot me down ;D

Hi Kiwiserbian

Can't help with the date but...I do have a photo with a very similar background.

The photographer was Standish & Preece, 218 High St, Ch Ch (Christchurch).

If you have the original, a scan of the back and photo edges will help with the dating.

Hope this helps.

Coco

Think that's what's called a mushroom hat - and Edwardian by the looks of my book on the subject!  Late 1890s or early 1900s.

Am also guessing Edwardian era. I expect China and Jim will be able to pick up lots of dating clues in that photo and set us right if we are wrong.  ;)

It looks like she is wearing some kind of lightweight 3/4 sleeved (possibly linen?)  jacket over a high necked blouse.

Google edwardian photographs or ladies and I'm sure you will find similar photos.

Just as an aside, I'm not sure that the background is the same as that in the link. I am guessing there would have been a number of stock backgrounds which photogrpahers chose from. Or would they have produced their own painted backdrops? (one for China and Jim I think  ;))

Thanks so much for the replies to my query so far. The Edwardian period does fit perfectly. This photo is my grandmother and with your imput I think the photo would have been taken in Australia around 1907.

I just had another look at the photo and it is on a Postcard. Written on the back of the postcard is the word Post Card (top middle), Correspondence (top left) a dividing line down the middle then Address Only (top right) and where a stamp would go is written Kodak, Australia.

Coco2101, Thanks for the link. The background is similar but my grandmother never visited Christchurch. I think the background is pretty standard.

As has been said this is Edwardian & a late decade style.
Does the Kodak stamp box have 4 crosses in the corners.

Looks more like black dots in the corner.
