There is a passenger list for a Lina Marguerite Philp born Switzerland and same age as the Margaret on the 1920 census, who was a British subject and sailed from Chile in 1919 to join her husband John Philp in Los Angeles.  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-22242-27894-79?cc=1916078  You can see the husband's name & address on the 2nd page.

Thank you so much for this information.  Like gold dust. As the name was spelled Philf in the 1930 census it was missed. This is wonderful information however now I am chasing John Philp born in Switzerland.  So much more to search now. So grateful.

In case there was any confusion, the reference to place of birth on the passenger list would have been for Lina Marguerite, rather than her husband.  Considering that she was listed as a British subject, maybe it was from marrying a British man?

You know the moment I posted that return I realised how idiotic I was and it was part of the indent for Lina. Thank you for your kind help.
