George Owen Casualty Details?
« on: Thursday 27 March 14 21:38 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find information relating to a George Owen who is recorded on the St.Andrew C.of E. Church, Linacre (Bootle) WW1 memorial.

I have searched Soldiers Died, but the only soldier that I can find that could be him is 3852 George Joseph Owen, London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers).
CWGC gives additional detail - Son of John Owen, of 9, Mackenzie St., Everton, Liverpool.

Is this the same man that appears on the memorial?

Many thanks for any pointers!

Jim, unfortunately the detail on the memorial does not include any other details apart from name. see.... http://www.merseysiderollofhonour.co.uk/memorials/southsefton/bootle/linacrestandrew.php

I also had a look at details of the Bootle civic WW1 memorial but no G. Owen is listed.

Looking at some of the bio's they all appear to have been born Liverpool or environs so if this is the only George Owen born in that area then it's probably him but I don't think you will ever know for sure without a Regt. no.
Have you found any others in Liverpool on the census ?

I did check the 1911 cen and for me there are only 2 names with an appropriate age but the one I really thought might be him appears to live to far away from the parish church unless it is a very big parish , I,m presuming all those on the memorial are from st Andrews ch parish ?

You could look for the same family on the 1901 census as they might have lived in Bootle before Everton, or there could be another link.
There is no 'G. Owen' on the Liverpool Town Hall roll of honour, which is very far from being a complete record.

Not all from the same Parish. 3 mentioned are Liverpool, Bootle & Litherland.

The George Joseph Owen you are talking about is my uncle. He was killed on the Somme on Oct 8/1916 at the age of 25.  He was born at 9 Mackenzie St, Liverpool; son of John Owen. For some reason I am unaware of he served in the London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers) 1st/3rd Bn. not a Liverpool regiment like his brothers. His name is on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Faces 9 D and 18 B. His family consisted of two brothers and a sister; one of the brothers, John, was my father.

I would be interested to hear why you are searching for him and would like to have a reply to see if I could help further. I currently live in Canada.
