Otter Family 1841 & 1851 Marton
« on: Thursday 23 June 05 12:39 BST (UK) »
I wondered if anyone would be so kind as to look the following family up in the 1841 and 1851 census returns.

The head of the family was George Otter. I don't have his age or place of birth as by 1861 he seems to have disappeared - most likely died. His wife was Hannah and there were at least 3 children:

Sarah Ann b. 1837 Marton
Jemima Elizabeth b. 1839 Marton
Elizabeth b. 1842 Marton

I would be very grateful for any info on them from 41 or 51.

Many thanks

Helen

1841

640-13/10
Marton
George OTTER 25 AgLab
Anna 25
Sarah 4
Jemima 1
All born Lincs.

Age 25 means 25-29yrs.

Is Hannah the one living in Winteringham 1861 (also born there)? EDIT: Probably not, her husband was John.

I've looked at all of the OTTERs in the Gainsboro area 1851 without success.

Thanks Geoff for that. I think the names Anna and Hannah were interchangeable in those days or the census taker got it wrong.

I wonder where they went after? Elizabeth was baptised at Marton in 1842 and turns up in 1861 married to George Warrener in Sheffield. Jemima is a cook at a school in Nottingham in 1861 but disappears after that. Sarah I can't find at all until the later census's where she is married to a Sidney Yelland.

Thanks again for the help,

Best regards
Helen

Hi, Ive come across this family a few times, am researching all Otter's in NTH Lincolnshire. Have them on the 1841 census but only found Jemima on the 1851 census in the ashby area

    George Tharratt Head 40
    Francis Tharatt wife 35
    Jemima Otter niece 11

Would be interested in how your tree fits in

   Cheers Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the 1851 entry for Jemima. My link to this family is that Elizabeth Otter, the youngest of the 3 sisters, was my GGGgrandmother. She married George Warrener and they eventually settled in Nottingham. Their first born, John Henry Warrener, 1861 Gainsborough, was my GGgrandfather. I was Helen Warrener before I married. I have loads of info on The Warrener (Warriner) family but not much on the Otters, so anything you have on this branch would be most welcome.

Thanks
Helen

Hi, have the following which I havent followed up but think its the same family.
Marriage in the parish of Kirton in Lindsey in the year 1835. George Otter of the parish of (cant read it) batchlor and Hannah Powell of this parish spinster were married in this parish by ? with the consent of ? this twenty? day of April 1835 by me ? in the presence of ? and ? signed George Otter & Hannah Powell. Its hard to read but you might be able to get a copy & have more luck.
All my Otter's came from around Kirton in Lindsey so thats why Im wondering why they married there & how George is related.
Also have the following which is dated 20th November 1835 which ties into the marriage date for George & hannah.
George Otter of Fenton.labouer, age 22 born Rampton, Notts. About a fornight before Martinmas 1830 he was hired by william briggs of Torksey farmer to serve him from martinmas 1830 to martinmas 1831 for 6.00 pound wages and he served the year and received the wages and has not to his knoweledge done any act to gain a subsequent settlement. About six weeks before mayday last he married Hannah his present wife and is actually chargable to the township of Fenton. Dated 20th Novenber 1835 signed George Otter
This makes George born about 1813 in Rampton, Notts where he shows up on the IGI.
          Cheers Kevin
