White of Wotton Under Edge and further?
« on: Monday 24 March 14 17:22 GMT (UK) »
I have a George White born approx 1747 (according to census) who was living in the Ann Bearpacker Almshouses, Wotton Under Edge,  in 1841 at the grand age of 94. He cannot have lasted much beyond that but I cannot find his death locally. George was in the same household as a Mark White, b 1784 possibly another son of his but cannot trace him either

George married Mary Petty in Hawksbury, 1774 and I have found one child born there, George 1774 and another son John, who is my direct relation, born Wotton Under Edge 1779.

I would love to know when George died and when and where he was born. Also, if he and Mary had any more children apart from George and John. Really hoping someone can help here.

Hi,
A George WHITE died 1842 Dursley 11 241 Sep Qtr, aged 97.
I believe that Wotton-under-Edge comes under the Dursley Registration District.

Ah, I hadn't realised that, I was only looking at Wotton Under Edge only.

I have now found Mark on IGI, he is George's son. I also found a William and Hannah on the IGI site but don't know if they are born too late to be the children of my George and Mary

Hi,
I thought I'd also check the marriage for you.
Source: Phillimore Gloucestershire Marriage Index
George WHITE married Mary PETTY at St Mary, Hawkesbury, 3rd January 1774.

Yes, thanks Victor, I did have the marriage and as I said their firstborn, another George was born Hawkesbury as well. What I need to know, now, is where to look for George's birthplace/date. I cannot get to Wotton myself, in then next 6 months.  I have spent so long looking today that my head is spinning, lol.

Hi,
Okay, I'll check the Hawkesbury & Wotton-under-Edge baptism records for you, at Glos Archives, and get back to you.

Hi

If you are interested, The Ann Bearpacker Almshouses are still in existence and lived in.
Very quaint and with pretty gardens.

Look for St Mary The Virgin Church on the B4058 (Coombe Road). On the other side of the road the Almshouses are situated between Parklands and Adey's Lane. Take a camera!

Regards

Giggsy and Alpine, those cottages look gorgeous.  They look so much larger than I would have expected Almshouses to be, although climbing the stairs might have been troublesome for a 94 year old!!! Also, surprised that his son Mark was allowed to live with him. He is down as a weaver but of course me might no longer have been working by 1841.

George has come up as living in the first cottage after Adeys Lane in he census. Does anyone know if this would be the cottage at the top LH end of the rows or the bottom RH one?

Wotton under Edge has 3 lots of Almshouses??? How caring. No wonder families stayed in the area for a long time.

Victor, do you actually go to the Gloucester Archives for yourself? Truly, I wouldn't want you to go there especially.  I see that there are a couple of CDs I can buy but they are further back than my George would be, so not much point yet.
