Sky Cloud Windows 8
« on: Sunday 23 March 14 14:46 GMT (UK) »
Have new computer running win 8.1.  There is, in theory, a wonderful free storage area called Sky Drive, name changing to one drive shortly.  In this area, photos and documents can be saved, and accessed by another device using Skydrive.  This is great but have hit a major problem.  I want to send some pictures of ancestors, which are stored in this drive, to another researcher.  It wont let me do this.  Can anyone tell me if they have worked out this problem and can advise me how to do it.  Thank you.   Jean

Thank you for replying to my post.  I have checked out the article you suggested, which is such a long winded way of sharing my photo, and is not what I was looking for.  If I put my pictures in its own folder (not in cloud) I can share it on my forum with no problems at all.  All I have to do is click on upload photo, click on the actual picture (in its own folder not in cloud) and it appears.  This does not happen when items are stored in the Cloud drive.  Seems like I will have to either forgo the cloud and save all my pictures and documents in other folders, or stay with cloud and not be able to share easily.  Having used Win 8 for a month now, I suggest that whoever came up with the idea wants shooting.  So many bells and whistles which are not needed.  I had thought that the cloud was one of the best ideas but sharing is so complicated.  Thanks again, regards J

What about a dropbox account?
I use to store/share large folders of information too large for an attachment to e mail.

Skydrive Onedrive can also operate is a similar fashion to Dropbox - you can "get a link" which you email or send to people and by clicking on that link they can access the item whether it is a photograph or document file. Although provided by different companies they are part of the "Cloud Storage" idea/system.

The method you describe of "uploading" an image to a forum is a different idea entirely - with Cloud storage the idea is that you remain in control of who sees it or what they can do with it - uploading an image to any online forum (unless you are the owner/controller of that forum) puts any image out of your control as basically you are transferring the file to anothers computer.

An example of a link working is this file
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/22414493/Capture.JPG
and clicking on it should allow you to view the image  (a screen grab of my post)

Thank you gentlemen for your imput.  One Drive is not suitable for the action I need to put a picture on my cake forum.  There are about 500 ladies in this forum and most of them have to get  help turning the computer on and off, let alone accessing a picture which is not in front of them.  I have quite a large hard drive so I am going to deposit pictures of cakes etc in its own folder and leave the other stuff in One Drive for me to access on my tablet.

Now going to try and get my 2 year and 1 year old printers working on Win 8.1  The printers work but neither will scan, but that's another story.  Thanks again
