Do you have all the info you need on Dr George Bodle, Alfriston, NZ

eg His wife was born on circa 1867 during the siege of Lucknow - her father was a major in British army. Dr George came out to New Zealand as the ship's surgeon, also evidently with his mother plus her maid, (year circa 1874). Her maid's name was a Louisa Haines circa Brighton 1861 (who was my great grandmother). He did not establish a practice here although was registered I understand from records. He gave long faithful service to the residents and gum diggers of South Auckland (Alfriston & Brookby areas) in his capacity as a 'free' doctor.  Mr & Mrs George Bodle built a lovely homestead by all accounts however it has not endured the test of time. He also built, with other residents a place known as the "Meeting House" - a Church of Christ establishment. 'Bushey Park' was the name of his farm covering an extensive area in the 1880's reaching from the Anglican Church to the junction of Ranfurly and Stratford Roads, bording the Alfriston Road opposite the Church, including the school, store and what was the Stone property in the 1970's.

I am interested in any census information on Louisa Haines (b Feb 1861 Brighton UK) and parents from Brighton, as I do not have access to it here....Can anyone assist please?

Hi,
I haven't thought about George Edward Bodle for quite a while now.  I am most definately interested in learning more about him.  It has been difficult to be able to link him to the other Bodles of Alfriston, Sussex.

The information that I have been able to glean from the records and from information from two of his descendants include:

He was born in about 1844 in Sydney, Australia to George Bodle and Anne Butler.  George Sr was in the military.

George Edward's siblings were born in Ireland and one drowned in India.

Anne Butler died in Ireland and George Sr moved back to England.

George Edward Bodle married Eliza Janetta Darroch.  Eliza was born in India in about 1845.  In 1861 she was living in Hampshire, England and married George Edward Bodle in Kensington District, London in 1870.

They lived in Middlesex in 1871 (when their daughter Annie was born) and in Devon in 1873 when their son George Angus Bodle was born.  George Angus died in New Zealand in 1878.  He fell into ship's hatch during voyage to New Zealand and died 6 months later.

The Bodles had travelled to New Zealand via the USA.   I am not certain as to why they took that route

They did have relatives in the US (the Ingrams), some of whom did end up in New Zealand.  The story of the Ingrams, Darrochs and Scotts is a long and convoluted one that unfortunately I don't have time for at the moment.

As for Louisa Haines, I cannot find any record of her travelling with the Bodles to New Zealand.  There are census records of a Louisa Haines living in Brighton with her parents (George and Emily) in 1861.  In 1871 she is in Gloucestershire working as a servant (as is one of her sisters).  In 1881 she is in Paddington, London working as a nurse.

Evidently Dr George Bodle and Eliza (nee Darroch) arrived in Papakura, Auckland, New Zealand in circa 1875. They had supposedly left their home in Alfriston, Sussex, together with their three children. The mother I have now discovered, and that came out with them, was Eliza's mother, Mrs Susan Darrock (nee Parker), and she was accompanied by her maid Louisa Haines who both occupied the front suite of rooms in their new home at Alfriston, New Zealand. Mrs Susan Darrock's husband was a Major Duncan Darrock with Eliza born during the seige of Lucknow in India, 1857.

Background - John Darroch and Mary MacAlpin were booked to marry in the parish of Kilcalmonell, May 18th, 1787. Duncan Darrock-   baptised   23: 1:1796 refer
www.ringofpeace.org/about/darroch.html
Major Duncan Darroch is recorded on the promotion and preferment list for 1842 as being a Brevet Captain with the 81st Foot being promoted to Major. (Appearing inTHE CONNAUGHT JOURNAL Galway, Thursday, February 19, 1824 - Military column as gazetted - 20th Regiment of Foot, Ensign Duncan Darroch to be lieutenant without purchase)

Does this help...?

Hi,
Thanks for the information.  I have some slightly different information.  My records show that Eliza Darrcoch's parents were Donald George Angus Darroch and Eliza Scott.  Donald Darroch was the brother of Duncan Darroch who married Susan Parker.  Below is the record of the Bodles emigration to New Zealand along with Eliza's mother, Eliza.

Name BODLEY,
Vessel CITY OF NEW YORK: July 31 1878 Notes Title: Mrs
Name BODLEY,

Name BODLEY, G D
Vessel CITY OF NEW YORK: July 31 1878
Name DARROCH, E M
Vessel CITY OF NEW YORK: Arrived:Auckland July 31 1878
Notes Title: Mrs

Vessel: CITY OF NEW YORK Captain's name: W. B. Cobb Port of departure: San Francisco Date of arrival: 31 July 1878 Port of arrival: Auckland Vessel type: Steamship Tonnage: 3020 Notes: Pacific Mail Steamship Company. Source: New Zealand herald, 1 June 1878

Although there are many other Darrochs in New Zealand, I can't find evidence of Susan Darroch emigrating there, nor can I find records of Louisa Haines.

OK great that makes the 1974 Alfriston centenary book here wrong and it was George and Eliza's auntie Susan and her maid Louisa Haines that came out to New Zealand.  Perhaps George went back for Susan in circa 1881...??? as she was living alone at that stage in Paddington, London I believe with her nurse Louisa and we know both came out to New Zealand and lived in the front rooms of George and Eliza's house in Aldriston, South Auckland. Any other info on them would be appreciated.

I have tracked Louisa Haines to Brighton (b) 1861

Thankyou for your valuable help.
