Could do with a keyword box on the Census search page.

While it's possible to restrict to the Census years you want through the Record Set filter, as others have said the birthplace location boxes aren't working.

If you go to the individual census search forms found under 'search all records' instead of the 'all census search' where you set Record Set Filter, they have a keywords search field. All except the 1901 census which for some reason doesn't.

I don't normally mind change and I'm sure that the underlying architecture of the site needed a good sorting out.

The worst features (for me) so far are:

The lack of displaying all household details in one simple table
Inability to do a straightforward database search such as "all Edward Joneses, born in Oswestry, living in Shropshire in 1861"
Inability to search using known census references
Inability to search for a birth using maiden name
Lack of the old "marriage finder"

I'm sure some of these searches may still be possible using keywords but, whereas a nil result from the old search engine was sometimes a useful result, it now won't be.

Thanks for the heads up Simon, although 1911 isn't showing one either.  It would be better if they had a keyword search box on the All Census Search as it's more likely to be the one used.

I must have edited my original post re this while you were typing reply. ;)

The site is soooo slow, wonder if they're tweaking things in the background.

If you put the mother's maiden name in the keyword box on the Birth Index search form, it does work as I've tried it this morning.  Similarly with the marriage index search form, again if it's in the keyword search it does seem to work.

Oh dear, I was moved over a few weeks back but managed to hang on to the old version.  Like others on this thread I have been logged out overnight so now need to grapple with the new search.

Inability to search using known census references

Mike,

The ability to enter the known census references is available on each individual census year's search form. Select 'Search All Records' from the Search Records tab and select Census from the resultant page. Each individual census is available and the reference fields are available to search on.

Took the plunge and entered my log in details on the laptop, and I'm still on the old site - perhaps it started in the middle of the country and is working outwards.  ;D
