Paul Schafer (Schaefer) Musician, living in Huddersfield?
« on: Saturday 15 March 14 19:07 GMT (UK) »
On the 2nd of April 1919, The Yorkshire Post carried a news item - German's visit to Scarborough.  German born Paul Schafer was said to have entered the prohibited area of Scarborough in order to fulfil an engagement at a Picture House.  The Chief Constable of Scarborough said that due to a mistake on the part of a police sergeant in Huddersfield, Schafer was given a permit to go to Scarborough.  So far I have failed to find this man living in Huddersfield.  I don't know his age, but he is said to have a son serving during WW1, with the British Troops at Mons.  The son is thought to be called Carl/Paul or Paul Carl Schafer.  So far I have not managed to find father or son living in Huddersfield, although the father is supposed to live there from 1889.  Any help/suggestions would be welcomed.

Hello Claire,
Thank you for your help.  Sadly I think I must be looking for a different Paul Schafer.  Today I have found a press item (ALIEN FROM HUDDERSFIELD) from The Huddersfield Daily Examiner which gave his age in 1919 as being 50 years.  In court he claimed that he had served in the British Army and that his son had served with the First Expeditionary Force.  He said his own father had been a Russian Pole, and that he himself had been born in Germany.  Finally he claimed that he had lived the life of an Englishman for 30 years - so from around 1889.  I find it odd that he does not pop up in the census.
The search continues ...

I find it odd that he does not pop up in the census.

In 1901 he's in Devonport, as C. H. Paul SCHAFER, aged 32, Musical Director, born Germany.

Ancestry has him as SCHAPER.

I think this is the father in 1911, also in Reading ...

I know it looks unlikely, but the full 1911 schedule is more encouraging, if you can access it.

Hello Bookbox,
Many thanks for your efforts.  I should have said that I found it odd that he did not appear on more than the 1901 census.  I really appreciate that you found him on the 1911 census, and yes, I am sure it is him, despite the change of name, country of birth and occupation.
Thanks again
