Hello Trixy
I can add a little more information which clarifies the situation. I list below all the HODGES entries found in the Stoke Talmage parish register transcript and these show that George was baptised there - but not as George HODGES.

9 Aug 1830 Ann HODGES, aged 76
19 Oct 1830 Thomas HODGES, aged 80
The Stoke Talmage parish registers also include the following baptisms:
19 Jun 1791 Sophia, baseborn dau of Anne BOWERS
21 Jan 1793 William, baseborn son of Anne BOWERS
30 Mar 1794 George, natural son of Anne BOWERS
The above three BOWERS baptisms and the marriage between Thomas HODGES and Anne BOWERS are the only instances of the surname BOWERS in the Stoke Talmage registers.
It would appear that, after the marriage of Thomas HODGES and Anne BOWERS, Anne's illegitimate children were known as HODGES rather than BOWERS. In addition, although a little older than might be expected, it seems that the Thomas and Ann HODGES buried in 1830 might be George's parents. Also, as Thomas was born about 1750 he could be the Thomas baptised 2 Sep 1750 to William and Ann HODGES in Brightwell Baldwin.
