Are the records for old Blaris graveyard available any where please.

Hi, my great, great grandmother was buried in Old Blaris graveyard in 1879 her name was Agnes Leathem from Lisburn, I have her death certificate. my problem is her husband John Leathem, I have one death certificate but nothing confirms it is the right one So I am wondering if I found the records for the grave yard if her husband would be also their ? Can any one help me with this please. Many thanks wendy

PRONI http://www.proni.gov.uk , has a will for a Leathem
The Will of John Leathem late of Maize County Down Farmer deceased who died 4 February 1875 at same place was proved at Belfast by the oath of Edward Leathem of Knockmore (Lisburn) County Antrim Farmer one of the Executors.

Perhaps I shouldn’t presume you know about the Leathem entries on the Ros Davies website mentioned at the start, which shows a Noel Lavery has supplied information eg Silas   LEATHEM Blaris   regd. Lisburn; married Mary Flemming 26 Apr 1844 in Lisburn Cathedral; father of Dorothea chr. 26 Sep 1847 & & Ann chr. 15 Dec 1850 & William chr. 26 Dec 1852 & Silas b. Apr 1859 & Dorothea chr. 12 Aug 1862 & Thomas Edward b. 17 May 1865 & Dorothea b. 21 Jan 1870 (sic)   PR;CR; Noel Lavery

Hello Jim G, and many many thanks for your help. I will try all the things you have mentioned although their is a picture of a grave yard called old Blaris graveyard Lisburn on line. It says it's on the Blaris Rd. But my great grandmother did attend church of Ireland Christ church cathedral so that is a possibility. Thanks again Wendy

Yes I found the google picture, which I think gives its address as No 80-82 Blaris Road Any confusion is caused because the same road has the newer cemetery

My limited experience of visiting graveyards is you might be lucky enough to find a grave yard assistant who can tell you if it has its own plot record of internments, then the year of death is all important and then a bit of patience to search through a years listings.  I did wonder if the caretaker of the newer cemetery holds the older plot records.
He might have been buried there, but without any addition to the wording on the actual tombstone, but his burial just might be recorded. Then he might have had a different faith and be in a Presbyterian grave nearby?.  Lisburn has a strong historical Society that might help you?
So its all luck and keep trying

Hi Wendy.

I just read your post from March. I too live in Australia but was born in Belfast and all my relatives live in Lisburn. Many of my ancestors are buried in the Old Blaris graveyard and on my last two visits I spent a lot of time locating and cleaning up their graves, It is a rambling old cemetery with much of it over grown. There is a video on you tube

which you might find interesting. It is a walk through of the cemetery but at night using night vision glasses.

You can direct your query regarding your relatives grave to Zoe at the Lisburn Council Offices, she is the cemeteries admin person. If you have any problem let me know and I will dig out her direct email address for you. She is very busy but also very helpful as long as you don't inundate her with questions. The only problem you may have is that the records may not go back that far but you might be lucky if other family members with the same name were buried in later years and it was a family plot.

Good luck, let me know how you go. I am planning another trip there next year, if you find out where the grave is I can get a photo for you.
