Licensed Victuallers - Application London Pub

Hi

I am trying to find the birth details of a Thomas Grainger, who ran The Chamberlain Pub in 12 Noble Street in London from say 1835 until 1844 when he died there.  I thought maybe he would have to put his birth details on his application form to be a licensee?  Where do I look to see his application or can anyone suggest where else I may look.  The only details I have on him is from his Death Certificate which says he died on 14 November 1844 at the pub and he was aged just 43. His wife Elizabeth nee Burkett born 1805 in Cottenham, Cambridge was also name as Victualler on the 1841 census living at the pub with their 4 children. I cannot find where he is in 1841.

Unfortunately there are very few licensing records available between the licensing acts of 1828 and 1872, and those that survive do not normally give date/place of birth.

The licensing records for the City of London and Middlesex are held at London Metropolitan Archives. They are not online. Details are in this Information Leaflet (.pdf file)
