Birth Look Up For Licensee Thomas Grainger
« on: Friday 14 March 14 10:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have been looking for ages for the birth/baptism of a Thomas Grainger. His Death Certificate says he died 24 November 1844 at where he worked, the pub called The Chamberlain Arms, 12 Noble Street, London, aged just 43, so puts his year of birth at 1801.  He married an Elizabeth Burkett (Born 1805 in Cottenham,Cambridge) on 11 September 1826 at St. Luke's Church, Old Street, London.  I believe his children were also christened there - Elizabeth Grainger Born 1829, Thomas Grainger Born 1838 ,Hannah Grainger Born 1832 and William Grainger in 1840. I can't seem to find him on the 1841 census (checked Old Bailey records and nothing on him in prison etc.).  Not sure how to find him in a local hospital?  His wife Elizabeth and their children are on the 1841 census living at the pub in Noble Street, naming her also as Victualler.  I do not know the names of Thomas's parents. I thought maybe his gravestone may hold some clues but I have read that the gravestones have long gone from St. Lukes.
Can anyone help me with this please?

Many thanks
Aunty Gene

I thought maybe his gravestone may hold some clues but I have read that the gravestones have long gone from St. Lukes.

Thomas GRANGER was buried on 1 December 1844, not at St Luke's but at City Bunhill (National Archives, RG 8/76, the non-parochial register series). He was aged 43 and from 12 Noble Street. The burial record (accessible via Ancestry) refers to a family grave in the Upper Ground.

City Bunhill was also known as Golden Lane and should not to be confused with the much bigger Bunhill Fields nearby. It has now been built over -- information and map on this page – scroll halfway down, to City Bunhill (Golden Lane).

As there was a family grave, perhaps you can identify other GRA(I)NGER siblings living in the same area? If they survived beyond 1851, you may pick up a clue to a possible place of birth for Thomas. Did any family members witness his marriage?

I can't seem to find him on the 1841 census

He may have been in the London and Middlesex Debtors' Prison for the 1841 census. He was there in January 1842, according to the London Gazette of 1 February 1842 ...

The Court for Relief of Insolvent Debtors

On their own Petitions:
...
Thomas Granger, late of Noble-street, Goswell-street, Middlesex, Victualler. In the Debtors’ Prison for London and Middlesex

The prison was in Whitecross Street and is missing from the 1841 census.

This may be a long shot as I do not know how old this post is. I am related to Thomas Granger and have been looking for his birth, parents and siblings for many years with no result. I cannot read the witnesses on the marriage certificate but they are not Granger or Burkett and one of the witnesses is also on the certificate for a previous marriage of Elizabeth Avenell. Please let me know if you have unearthed any other information
