George Grey 28th regiment of the foot and Hannah Harvey Plymouth
« on: Thursday 13 March 14 15:47 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for some info on George Grey/Gray in 1848 was listed as a Private in the 28th regiment, birth approx. 1832.  4 November 1849 he marries Hannah Harvey in Plymouth, Devon.  In the 1851 census he is listed as a solider of the 28th stationed at Salford barracks in Manchester shown as married.  In the same census Hannah is shown as a laundress lodging in Manchester with son George who was born 1850 to Hannah and George in Portsea.  Hannah is the daughter of John Harvey and Mary born 4 August 1829 in Plymouth Devon .   George seems to have been sent to India, probably Lucknow, Bengal as part of the 61st regiment.  George Jnr. is likely to be George William Grey who is in India and father of George Donald Grey who marries Sarah Emily Gibson on 15 April 1869 Lucknow Bengal.  Any information would be appreciated on George (1832) as to who his parents were.  Trying to prove he was not the son of Richard Grey of Waterperry Oxon.  Any info on the various Georges and Hannah would be a help.   ???  Thanks Sue

Actually the image shows he is married.  ;)

Can I just check that there are no typos please?

George Grey/Gray enlisted in 1848, birth approx 1832.  So he was 16 on enlistment and married one year later at the age of 17.  He was born in Oxfordshire (from 1851 census).

What age is given on the marriage certificate, please?  The marriage certificate would confirm age, occupation and his father's name.  You really ought to get that if you haven't done so already.  It would answer so many questions.

George (soldier in 28th regiment) sent to India – how certain are you of this?

George jnr (b 1850) is possibly George William Grey/Gray.
You think George William Gray's son (George Donald Gray) married in India in 1869.  However, George the son of the soldier would only be 19 in 1869 and any son he might have would not be old enough to marry.

Time for a rethink?

There is a birth registration Sept qtr for a George William Gray in Portsea Island RD.
