Freak accident
« on: Wednesday 12 March 14 04:17 GMT (UK) »
I was doing some cemetery research (as you do  :)) & came across this unusual entry for Putney Vale Cemetery, Wandsworth;

John Ingram, 32, a grave digger at Putney Vale who died in a freak accident, hit in the chest from a stray bullet from the rifle range at Wimbledon Common. Buried yards from where he fell, leaving a pregnant wife and infant daughter. Every May 22 local resident John Cooper lay flowers on the man's grave.[9]

It happened on Tuesday 22nd May 1894, when he was digging a grave at Putney New Cemetery with his back to the shooting range where the 12th Middlesex, 25th Middlesex and 4th Surrey regiments were practicing. A stray bullet struck his back and entered his lung. His cries for help were heard and he was taken first to the police station and then to the West London Hospital where he died the next day.

There was an enquiry but it couldn't be decided where the bullet had come from.

Reported in the Surrey Mirror Saturday 26 May 1894

Good evening,

Not sure where the Surrey Mirror got there facts from but!
The 4th were the Kings Own (Royal Lancashire Regt)
The 12th were the Suffolks
The 25th were the KOSBs

Middlesex regt were the The Duke of Cambridges Own (formerly 57th and 77th foot)
West Surreys were the 2nd foot
East Surreys were the 31st (formerly the 31st and 7oth foot)

As you can see the Regiments names and no's or former no's don't match up.
