William GOODE (1808-1865)
« on: Tuesday 11 March 14 21:21 GMT (UK) »
I have been trying, without success, to locate the birthplace of my 2xggrandfather, William Goode.
This is about as much as I have been able to find:
Born: England (or perhaps Scotland?_ between 1808 & 1815 (Death records state he was 50 at dod, whereas headstone states he was 57)
Married: 1850 in Adelaide, SA to Jane Nichol Anderson (who was born in Scotland)
Died: 1865 in Port Lincoln, SA.
I have been unable to locate him on any passenger lists of people coming to SA.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
Bill.

Hi, Any idea as to what your William was doing for a living while in Australia, it may help in locating his place of birth.

Did william and his wife have any children if so therir names may help in identifying him. according to the 1841 census. England Wales and Scotland there were 245 William Goode's and they come from all over ::)

There are quite a few born around the timeframe you have down.

Neil

MODIFIED..... meant to ask if you have his DC that should give how long in Colony and give an indication of when he arrived.

He is no relation to the William Goode of Port Pirie? 1841 to 1910?

This is an account of the accident which caused his death (in case you don't have it)
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article41032082   Doesn't mention his place of birth.

Sadly that information is not included in South Australian Death certificates in 1865.

Ages on headstone may be incorrect depending on the knowledge of the person who placed it.  Does it look a very old headstone.  It may have been placed by descendants.

Hasn't been identified by the compilers of the Biographical Index of SA in the shipping lists.

PORT LINCOLN
[From our own Correspondent ]
Port Lincoln. September 26

I am sorry to have to report the death of another of our respected residents, Mr. William Goode, who was proceeding to Mr. Jas. Anderson's station, driving a horse and cart. Having to pass a very bad sideling, which is quite unavoidable and dangerous to travel over, the cart appeared to have capsized, throwing the deceased's head on a large stone; and the cart falling over, must have crushed the head between the stone and the cart causing almost instantaneous death. An inquest was held on the 8th, when the evidence went to show the accident was quite accidental, and the Jury gave in their verdict accordingly. I may mention the deceased was very much respected by all who knew him, and leaves a widow and young family to mourn their loss. When we have had a few more such accidents I expect our roads will be made, verifying the old proverb, ' When the horse is gone lock the stable door.' There is no doubt had the road been made passable even, the deceased might still have been alive. I trust, as it is some time since the road was laid out that the work: may be proceeded with. There are numbers of men out of employ in the district who are eagerly waiting the work to commence.

Apologies Ros your link wasn't there when I started research.

Neil:       He was working as a farmer at Port Lincoln at time of death.
Children - Sarah, Charles William & William Edward.
Not sure if related to the Goode from Pt Pirie.
Interesting that there was a William Goods travelling from Launceston - May be a spelling
error and perhaps he was previously a convict. (Would explain why he's not on passenger
              lists!)
Rosball:   I have actually read this report before but thanks anyway.
Cando:    Thank you for replying once again to one of my queries.
I have seen the headstone and it looks very old but as you say, mistakes can be made.
Many thanks to you all.

Thank you Essie - our comments crossed.  I reckon the possibility grandpa was a convict is worth perusing further.    Thank you.
