Looking for my wife's Family in America
« on: Monday 10 March 14 15:20 GMT (UK) »
I have found a few bits of information about my wife's tree going from the Isle Of MULL to America.
On the Steam ship 'VICTORIA' New York Passenger List travelling from GLASGOW on the 04 Dec 1875 were two families 1.ALEXANDER KING and CATHERINE KING. 2.JOHN JEFFREY and MARY JEFFREY, JANET DUNN. Some more information came that in1880 JOHN JEFFREY and his Wife MARY McDonald were on a census in SOMERSET TOWNSHIP, COUNTY JACKSON, Illinois. I next find that JOHN JEFFREY and MARY McDonald in abt 1920 were in CARTERVILLE, WILLIAMSON, Illinois.
Could you possibly tell me the best place to start looking for more information Please. Thank you.

Multiple prior threads about these families referenced here - http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=605999.msg4554930#msg4554930

In the future, rather than starting a new thread, please add whatever new information that you have to the previous thread.

I don't see any sign of John or Mary on the 1920 census.  Both would have been around 100 years old at that time, so they may well have died by then.  There are no pre-1916 death records online for Jackson or Williamson counties - http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/databases/deathlst.html

There are deaths for possible children Richard Jeffrey and Janet Richardson here -
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N3FD-L22
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N3WY-XLQ

As both were buried in the same cemetery, perhaps John & Mary are with them.

I've lost track on exactly what Uggy is looking for.
His OP mentions Isle of Mull?
The 1875 immigration of John and Mrs Jeffrey show that John was Miner and they were both aged 50yrs. As far as I am aware there were no mines on Mull.

Also Shelly mentions Richard Jeffrey and siblings born to John Jeffrey and Mary McDonald.
I am not sure how or if Richard connects but.....

This is that same Richard at the home of his married sister Janet ( Jeanetta) who married James Forsyth in Scotland and emigrated to the US in 1865 with 4 Scots born children.
It looks like the family were following the Coal Fields as the children were born:
 Bathgate West Lothian.
 Govan, Lanarkshire
 Dalrymple Ayrshire
Calderhead, Lanarkshire

In 1870 they are  all found  in South Versailles, Allegheny PA

James Forsythe   42
Jeanetta Forsythe   45
Hugh Forsythe   18
Jeanette Forsythe   16
Mary Forsythe   12
Robert Forsythe   6
Richard Jeffrey   23 ***

Edit:
by 1880  The family of Richard's sister's has moved to  Somerset, Jackson, Illinois.
His sister has died and brother in law James Forsyth is a widower.

John Mccarnes   26
Mary Mccarnes   22  ( this is 12yr old Mary Forsyth from above 1870 return)
Henry Mccarnes   1
James Forsyth   50 Father in law B Scotland Widowed
Clementine Forsyth   9 Sister in law b PA
Robert Forsyth   16
 Brother In law. b Scotland

Apologies Shelly, I see it now.
The family above that I posted does not seem to be  the same Richard Jeffrey and his sister Jeanette, although I do think there is a connection.

Has this been posted already?
1851: Watson's Square, Newarthill, Bothwell, Lanarkshire

Name   Age
John Jaffrey   31 b HADDINGTON. Ironstone Miner
Mary Jaffrey   28 wife B Bothwell
John Jaffrey   6 b Bothwell
Richard Jaffrey   2 b Bothwell
Catharin Jaffrey   4 Mo

1861 : Patterfield, Eastwood, Renfrewshire

old Members:
Name   Age
John Jeffrey   41 b Haddington
Maray Jeffrey   40 Ayrshire
John Jeffrey   17
Richard Jeffrey   13
Cathrine Jeffrey   10
Janet Jeffrey   8
Agness Jeffrey   5 ** This is the only birth on FS b 23 Jul 1855. Registered Dalziel, Lanarkshire

1871: 3 Old Pit, Calderhead, Lanarkshire

John Jeffrey   51 B Haddington
Mary Jeffrey   49 B Ayr

It is more than likely that John and Mrs Jeffrey who emigrated in 1875. is this couple.

Edit:
Here they are in  Somerset, Jackson Illinois at 1880

Name   Age
John Jeffrey   60
Mary Jeffrey   57
