Does anyone know anything about the job of a waterman in Lincoln in the early 1800's, as my 4xGgrandfather occupation is given as this.

A couple of useful links:-

I have several ancestors and their relatives who were watermen. The type of job can vary and I think means anybody who worked on the river. One sailed the packet boat from Peterborough to Wisbech, which is over twenty miles. Most of the others seemed to work in and around Peterborough.
My wife has ancestors in Kent who worked on the rivers, although often described as bargemen.

Is there any way to find out what my relative did on the river in Lincoln? His name is Joseph Cole born around 1773 (not sure where). I know he married in Lincoln in 1804 for the first time. he died in 1830 in Lincoln.
