Married or Widow on census
« on: Thursday 06 March 14 17:02 GMT (UK) »
I would like to get an opinion about a census image if possible please. Does the entry opposite the arrow say Mar or Wid?

With the crossing out it is unclear.

Thank you for looking

Thank you Carol

I have read it as widow too. The image is badly scanned and the crossing out is not helpful.

Nice to have another opinion.

all the best

Genie :)

In my opinion - "Mar"

I can see only one entry which has an ascender for a final "d" and that is two lines above.

In my opinion - "Mar"

I agree with horselydown - I see it as Mar

If you give the census reference it might make a difference to see a larger selection of the writing.

My first thought was also Mar, but I would like to see more of the writing on the page to compare letters - the Wids, Mars and Unmars.  :).

The second entry from the top says Mar, and I think yours looks the same. Image is not the best though ....

I'm saying Widow after looking at all the entries in that column. But agree it is far from clear!
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

census information is Crown Copyright from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Perhaps if we knew "who, where and when" we might be able to find a clearer version.
