Johann Nicolaus Lorentz.
« on: Wednesday 22 June 05 16:10 BST (UK) »
Johann Nicolaus Lorentz, b. 1670, Kaiserslautern, The Palatinate, m. Margrath Roeckel, d. 1715, ????  They are known as "Irish Palatines".  Their children, Peter and George, may have been born in Killiheen, Limerick, Ireland and one, Mary, lived in Rathkeale,Courtmatress, Limerick, Ireland.

I suspect that the LORENTZ family mayhave been from Alsace, France.

I am trying to verify this information.

Also, I am hoping to determine the parents of Johann Nicolaus Lorentz. The parent of Margrath is Sebastian ROECKEL (1645-1678).

Hello Howard,

There is an Irish Palatine Association that might be able to assist. I'm not certain whether you have to join the Association before they put you in touch with experts on Palatine families but there's no harm in asking ...

Howard- was the Lorentz family from Kaiserslautern itself or somewhere nearby? Many of the old church records still exist although they are not usually online.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Based on online information, Johann Nicolaus Lorentz, b. 1670, Kaiserslautern, The Palatinate, m. Margarth Ruckle.  The family was there, but it could have arrived there from somewhere else.  There were migrations from Germany, Alsace and Switzerland due to a population vaccum caused by The Thirty Years War.  At least, this is my understanding of the circumstances in and around Kaiserslautern.  It would be difficult to determine which church records were related to the family.  The family may have been either Catholics or Lutherans; and in Limerick they became Methodists.  The latter religion was carried by them into The American Colonies and Upper Canada (now Ontario) and Quebec for several generations.
